6 BR luxury pre-war vintage home on Lower Eau Claire Lake

Historic pre-war vintage lake home built in 1929 and fully updated with all the amenities you expect. The home is nestled in the tall pines on nearly 18 acres. Open, sunny floor plan with plenty of room for family and friends. Log siding inside and out. The great room features 20’ ceilings and massive split-granite fireplace, an impressive chandelier, and wraparound balconies leading to the four upstairs bedrooms (two more are on the main level). There are many indoor and outdoor options for more casual entertaining.

The gourmet kitchen, with granite, stainless steel appliances, and hickory cupboards, will delight the master chef, plus there’s a second “summer kitchen” near the basement rec room. Two furnaces and two central air systems, full security system. Approximaly 5500 sq. ft. of living space. Space for 12 vehicles in two garages with room for bus or RV, and all the toys. A large, covered outdoor pavilion with concrete slab is a great space for picnics. Includes two docks, all appliances. Approx. 950’ gently sloping sand frontage on the lake, plus 1,350’ additional frontage on the Eau Claire River.

Perfect for Entertaining at the Lake

Want to visit with guests while you cook? Have them pull up a stool at your kitchen’s granite island. Later, you can move to the dining room, and then to the family room (it has a smaller fireplace of its own). If the party’s a little livelier, head for the basement rec area that features its own bar, pool table, music alcove, and TV room. Along one entire wall, you’ll find a hand-painted mural depicting the rowdy fans in Wrigley Field’s peanut gallery. In the mood for something more sedate, and perhaps even a little fresh air? You can choose from a patio for grilling, a screen porch, or a four-season porch that extends along nearly the entire length of the house. The fire pit by the beach is a great place to entertain a few friends on a quiet summer evening. Inviting a few dozen friends for a special occasion? Head for the spacious outdoor pavilion. Previous owners have used it for parties, reunions, and at least one wedding reception.

A Historic Pre-War Vintage Lake Home, Fully Updated

The property is known locally as “The Mooney Mansion.” It was built in 1929 by a Captain with the Chicago Police Department. Over the years, one or two people have wondered how he managed to build this sort of summer cottage on a policeman’s salary? But perhaps he just saved carefully.

Summer in Chicago in the 1930s. It’s hot and humid. You’re in a tough, competitive business. It’s time to get out of town and head for the north woods. Later, once things cool off, you can head back to the city. Yes, it’s good to have a getaway up north where you can relax with friends.

That’s still true today, no matter what business you’re in. And much of the home looks just as it once did. The original footprint has been expanded only slightly, and a tower still stands where the Mooneys built their own private water tower. If you look more closely, you’ll see that some things have changed—and definitely for the better. All of the original windows, for example, have been replaced with their modern easy-opening, energy-efficient, and maintenance-free counterparts. The gourmet kitchen has been tastefully done in granite and hickory, with stainless-steel appliances. Elsewhere in the home, you’ll find similar updates. All of them, however, have been made in a way that carefully preserves the home’s original historic character.

The home has two modern, high-efficiency furnaces, plus two central air systems. All of the home’s heating, cooling, plumbing, and wiring is completely modernized and up-to-date. There’s also a full electronic security system.

Spacious Grounds, a Fenced Garden, and Outbuildings With Plenty of Storage

You’ll enjoy 18 acres of wooded privacy and solitude. The property is, however, visited regularly by deer, bear, fox, beaver, eagles, kingfishers, and an occasional porcupine. It’s for this reason that its large garden is surrounded by a tall, deerproof fence. The enclosed area features several established blueberry plants and apple trees, with plenty of space remaining for vegetables or annuals. Back at the house, you’ll find a number of flowerbeds already planted with perennials.

At the waterfront, you’ll find two docks and wide beach. You’ll be able to pull several canoes and kayaks ashore, and yet still have plenty of room for sunbathing—or, if you like, a game of beach volleyball. Near the shore, there’s a small shed for life preservers and fishing tackle.

Features a 6-car garage with extra workspace. For additional storage, there’s a steel Morton building with room for several cars and boats, or even for two 40’ RVs. (Both buildings can be heated.) The outdoor pavilion has winter storage space for boats and pontoons.

I had to click the link just to check out that house.  Beautiful!  I thought the east coast was the only area with lovely 1920s houses.  There's nothing like having over 5,000 square feet of living area to make sure of your comfort.  Good luck on the sale.  I wonder where the Chicago Policeman got the $$ for the Mooney Mansion, but it's very, very cool.  I also like the 18 acres, especially when living on .18 acres in New York (and feeling lucky to have all .18 of them!)

Maybe Al Capone asked nicely or paid him to 'head west young man' so he could carry out the 1929 Valentine's Day Massacre without any disturbances.  There must be some great stories that builder could have told.

David, there isn't much history about this home other than what I wrote about. Probably better to not know too much.

Steve, send  one of those rich St Cloud doctors up this way. :)

Jean, that home is beautiful.  And I love that there's a bit of mystery to it too...if only the walls could talk.
