The permitting process has been a bit of a battle, but when it hit 95 yesterday having a pond was worth all the engineering costs. My site work contractor has been digging for four years (not a typo -four years). The work has not been continuous as digging has been on an as needed basis. When a project needed fill, gravel or loam the equipment would show up and dig furiously for a week or two...only to disappear for months at a time.
My son and I took a swim last night, and the 6 state and federal permits it took to dig a pond in a flood zone next to a class four river were all worth it. The watershed effect of being beside the river creates springs in the near by pond....which means it's warm on the surface and very chilly a few feet down. The river is extremely low this time of year but the pond is a cool 15 feet deep, when the river is high the pond will exceed 22 feet deep.
The river is knee deep at best right now, so having a pond in your yard in July couldn't be better.
