I hear Thursday is the new Friday, and looking at the events scheduled for today, I want to believe it! (I guess we can consider this a warm-up for Handy Week, which starts TOMORROW!!)

If you are a Baby Boomer or a Senior, there is a fishing event at Deibert Park just for you from 6:30-Noon! Catch and keep, catch and share, catch and release. Bring your own chairs, fishing equipment and snacks. No charge. Please sign in by the pavilion on the pond. The Florence Freshman Center’s 1st Annual Camp Falcon will take place on Thursday, July 21 from 10am to 2:30pm in the FMS/FFC Auditorium. During this program students will be introduced to the importance of being actively involved during high school & how that affects their future plans. The morning session will include a convocation program that will feature Dr. Eric Kirkman as the keynote speaker, followed by a College Fair. The afternoon session will include a study skills seminar & a motivational speech by Dr. B. Lee Hurren. The day will conclude with a meet & greet with area professionals. We look forward to sharing with all Freshmen who will attend the Florence Freshman Center this upcoming school year.

The Tuscumbia Civitan Club meets today at noon at the Helen Keller Public Library. They serve lunch and have a speaker each week. If you are interested in joining and becoming a contributing your time to this service club, contact Dewayne Crumley at 256-762-3808 for more information.

Alabama State Representative Lynn Greer will be the guest speaker at the next Shoals Republican Club meeting at noon, at Ryan’s on Cox Creek Parkway in Florence. Greer has represented Lauderdale County in the Alabama Legislature on four separate occasions. All meetings of the Shoals Republican Club are open to the public. If you are a fisherman(or just a fan of fishermen!), the weigh-in for the Wal-Mart FLW Tour Major is at 2:30 p.m. at McFarland Park.

The Spring Park MarketUpscale Farmer’s Market takes place again today at Spring Park in Tuscumbia from 4-7 pm. Fresh fruits and vegetables as well as homemade breads, jellies, soaps, and Shoals Culinary Center-made products will be available for purchase. There will be live music and cooking demonstrations. And best of all, IT’S FREE!

Local residents can learn more about living and eating well with diabetes at the Diabetes Academy, a free educational workshop and cooking demonstration with The Diabetic Chef™, Chris Smith. Chef Chris will be on-hand to make a low-carb, full-flavor dish and share favorite healthy recipes. Diabetes Academy is offered by Novo Nordisk, a leading diabetes care company. This is opening night for the Gingerbread Players production of Willy Wonka at the Shoals Theatre. The show starts at 7:30 pm tonight through Saturday night, and on Sunday at 2 pm  Tickets are $10 for adult and $8 for student, if you buy them in advance. The box office is open from 11-5 pm or you can buy tickets online at ticketleap.com. You can buy tickets at the door as well… $12 for adults and $10 for students.

This is also opening night for the Summerstock @ The Ritz production of Guys and Dolls SummerStock at the Ritz is a a theatre-education program for ages 16-29. Performances are at 7:35 p.m. The theatre opens at 7 p.m. Tickets are $17 for adults and $10 for students at the door and $15 for adults and $8 for students in advance from the Tennessee Valley Museum of Art, 256.383.0533, or from www.ritztheatre.ticketleap.com (online handling fee added). Many audiences consider this to be the perfect Broadway comedy, with its legendary characters and soaring songs.
