Stop Duplicate Titles!

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with Suplari, Inc.

In our efforts to keep ActiveRain highly SEO friendly and to get our member blogs to the top of the search engines, we are working with a well-known SEO consultant here in Seattle.  As I had mentioned previously, Google is frequently running its user experience and content optimization algorithm called Panda.  Panda targets content farms and duplicate content and then ranks those site lower in the search results as Google believes that those sites have search spam.

Our consultant Susan found a number of interesting things within the 3 million pages of content indexed by the search engines.

MANY of our members will publish blogs with the same titles week after week.  Examples include: Wordless Wednesday, Friday Funny, Market Update, etc.  I understand why our members do this, like a regular column in a newspaper, BUT this often confuses the search engines.  Even though the content of the blog post is different, since the title is the same AND used by many members of ActiveRain, the search engines could get confused and could label these posts as SPAM.

So, what to do?  Very simple: Add the date to the title of your blog post or add additional description.  Examples:

  • Wordless Wednesday July 20, 2011: Blue Ocean and Grey Skies
  • Market Update: Bellevue, WA July 20, 2011
  • Friday Funny - A Laughing Horse

A small amount of extra text will prevent a world of confusion AND protect the content and our domain authority at ActiveRain!

Please re-blog and share so we can get the word out.

Thanks for the heads up!  I sometimes do the Wordless (Insert Day Here) but I can see the issue and will make amends.

It is always more difficult for me to think up a good title than the blog post itself.  If I think up a clever title it usually has no seo value, but might get read.  Creating a good title takes a lot of thought and I also keep duplicate titles in mind, especially when posting about market stats (I always put a date in or something different).

Niki,

Thanks for confirming this practice. I've been doing this for sometime. I also include the date notation in image descriptions.

Best,

Steve

Hi Nikesh, Creating unique titles when you are syndicating the same post to different sites is a good thing. That being said, I don't always do it and as of yet, I haven't seen any collateral damage. Using the same title repeatedly on AR is another story and  definitely NOT good for AR domain authority. I would never repeat the same title on my own self-hosted blog or on AR.

Thanks Nikesh.  I am afraid I may somewhat do this on Listings blogs.  But, great ideas, I'll watch my titles.

Niki - Even though this post is not about duplicate content--it's about using the same title over and over for 'different' posts each week, month, year, etc.  But, that being said...

Renee is BRILLIANT!  To effectively combat the 'same title syndrome' when syndicating, why not have AR change the slug up a bit.  That would alleviate that problem completely!  Even though the bots are aware of syndication, the new 'rules' seem to be hitting some WP owners significantly.  The slug change would allow AR members to freely syndicate AND build their SEO simultaneously.

Brilliant, Renee!  I love that idea!  (Just hope Niki does too!)  :-)

Niki I listened in on a webinar about panda and the critical things we're going to need to do.  And I'm not quite gettting it all.  I was hoping you guys had your series out......it's quite complicated. There is a 2 day conference about this in Phx in a few weeks that I may attend to figure it out.

Glad to have this confirmed and also to know that the slight changes to the titles in your examples are enough to have it seen as a completely different post.

I dodged the title bullet by accident fortunatelyy.  Didn't have any idea that a title could work against me so just I have always varied my titles. Guess that was dumb luck on my part.  Thank you for your post.
