Why I Don’t Use DocuSign.....Yet!

In the world of real estate where the median age of a Realtor® is 56 and I’m a mature (see picture) 27, I find myself in the unique position of being a “tech savvy” agent almost by default. Yes, I have put tons of effort into staying up-to-date on the latest technologies, but let’s face it: my age and the generation I'm a part of have certainly given me an advantage when it comes to understanding and implementing technology in this industry.

So why then do I not use DocuSign, the way of the present and the future? The mega-simplifier of a Realtor’s life? The client-loved, agent-endorsed real estate industry breakthrough of the (previous) decade?

Unfortunately, the real estate world surrounding me in this town is sometimes slow to catch on. If I were to have a client sign a contract using DocuSign, it's likely that the other agent and/or lender and/or attorney may not be so readily accepting of this technological advancement, which could end up causing confusion and delays, the exact opposite of what DocuSign is designed to do.

Lately I’ve worked with several out of town buyers and the paperwork has been... challenging. When it comes to contracts, I like them to be neat, and pretty, and, above all, legible. But when you’ve had to send a document to three different locations throughout the country, each time to be printed, signed, and re-scanned, and then out for another round of initialing, things get messy and illegible. With my last transaction, the original contract became so messy, we had to do a “do over.” It. Drives. Me. cRaZy!!!

Now I hope it doesn’t sound like I’m whining, because I actually have a plan in place. I (almost) always do.

As it turns out, our local Realtor association had a technology committee quite a few years ago, and about, oh, 5 years ago they decided to disband the committee. HUH? Five years ago when technological advances were going haywire they decided to shut down the technology committee??? YES. (I told you this area is a little slow...)

So I decided to start it back up again. And it turns out that just as I had come to this decision, so had the new president of our local association. A new technology committee was formed with me on it, and of course one of my goals in the coming year is to introduce DocuSign to the association.

There’s a happy ending in sight.

Now, which of you DocuSign reps out there wants to visit Champaign-Urbana in the next few months to help me throw a DocuSign demo party for my local association? Just tell me when you’re coming and I’ll set it up :-)

P.S. I'm pictured here at Disney World. This is exactly how excited I'll be when DocuSign takes off in Champaign.

This post is a submission to the DocuSign/ActiveRain Electronic Signature Stories Contest. It's possible I will win a prize for writing this post. You could win a prize too by going to the Contest Announcement and sharing your own story.
