Think before you swim - Battle Ground Lake in Clark County washingtonThink before you Swim.
Hurray, the sun is finally shining!  Just remember to think before you swim in Clark County, Washington this weekend. Some lakes, rivers and streams are just too risky for swimming because of high water levels and swift currents. Parents especially need to remember there's no lifeguard on duty at most of our county swimming holes.

Tragedies can be avoided.
Sadly, three people have drowned this year in Southwest Washington.  The most recent involved an 11 year old boy who dove into the water after a pop bottle. He was with similar aged friends at a popular area known as,
the Potholes, south of Round Lake in Camas, Washington. A county parks official says the majority of deaths occur in open water during the months between May and August.

Do your research.
We have more than a dozen parks in Clark County with public swimming areas, however very few have an area marked exclusively for swimmers.
That creates an added risk and underscores the need for strict parental supervision while children are in the water. To try to prevent drownings, life jacket loaner stations have been put in place in some parks. However, it's a good idea for all parents of young children, to bring their own, just in case none are available.

Think before you swim -Water Safety in Clark County Washington Warm Weather and Water.
The weather forecast calls for plenty of sunshine with highs in the mid to upper 80's.  Sounds like a great weekend for fun on the water. Remember to use some common sense - know your limits, make sure you supervise all children the entire time they're in the water, and choose parks with the least risk. Think before you swim, it's most important part of water safety in Clark County, Washington.

These are the best swimming areas for young children.

Debb, That is such a great reminder.  We have had a lot of drownings in Utah this summer, more than I can remember in a long time!

Tony, we've had an abnormally cool and rainy spring and summer - therefore, when we get a warm weekend - everybody goes crazy and hits the water. Sadly, that's when we have problems. All of these drownings are preventable.

We should all consider this when enjoying the water for the day; it doesn't matter how experienced you are if you don't know the water's anything can happen.

One life lost is one too many.  Excellent plea to local residents to be more diligent and only swim where approved and safe.

Hi Debb.  It's easy to let common sense go out the window.    Great reminder to pay attention and be safe.

As a former member of the Coast Guard, I appreciate your article. Water is great fun, but it can also be a killer. Safety is usually simple common sense. And it's always good to keep to keep reminding folks.
