I clammed when my family vacationed on Block Island years ago, and it was something you did with your feet then; my parents would go barefoot, but I could not stand the feel of the bottom, so I would wear sneakers, you know, old school Keds.

Apparently, there have been improvements in the casual/recreational clamming world.

Here is the high tech clamming bucket you use to keep your catch:

Clam Bucket

I have no idea what we did, I'm thinking it was a bag or your pockets.

Here is the potato rake my friends use to "rake" the bottom for clams:

Clam Rake

Here is where we clammed, not far from their house:

Clamming

And, here is our catch of clams:

Clams

Which was a pretty good catch for four of us to yield. It was enough for linguine with clams & sauce for dinner AND stuffed clams this AM!

Dinner

This was what we did after the rains washed our our beach day - it's amazing how many different fun things you can do on one island in the same day!

Carol- looks like fun.  We used to go crabbing in the Galveton area when I was a kid.  Love littleneck clams on the grill.

Okay, I am hooked.  Between the vodka, beef and now clamming, I am putty in your hands.

We used to clam on the west coast.  As a child, I would never eat them, but I did love catching them.

Those are crayfish.  The crayfish I would eat for some reason.  Who knows what goes through the minds of children?

Carol - Isn't it amazing how the simplest of gadgets can pay big dividends when you are doing something as fun as clamming.  They can make all the difference in the world.

Sue -I had forgotten how fortunate it is to be more self-sufficient than store-dependent!

Terri - And, it was a restaurant quality meal for about an hour's worth of work.

Rob - It was cool, especially when you felt the "ping" of the clam on your rake!

Tony -It really was, and the cheapest meal I had on the island!

Suzanne - until your comment, I didn't realize how much it was an eating and drinking tour of Nantucket, but in retrospect, it was, and it was fun! I would love to still be up there!

Myrl - The rakes make it MUCH easier!

Keith - it is as long as you get IN the water, and away from the buggy shoreline, I learned!

Hi Carol,

There is something so satisfying about foraging for food from the ocean. Guess I've done my share on Cape Cod. Thank you!
