North Carolina Tax Free Weekend 2011 - August 5th until August 7th

Isn't the North Carolina tax free weekend (or tax holiday) everyone's most waited for weekend in the whole summer?!?!  Well, maybe not for everyone, but certainly for anyone looking into buying clothes, shoes, school supplies and computers.  Moms of the Triangle, here's some great news for you!

Mark your calendars!  The Noth Carolina Tax Free weekend is scheduled this year for the weekend of August 5th-August 7th!

Here's a list of the most common items that will be exempt from sales taxes:

  • Clothing, footwear, and school supplies under $100
  • School instructional materials of $300 or less per item
  • Sports and recreation equipment under $50 per item
  • Computers under $3,500
  • Computer equipment under $250
Clothing accessories, jewelry, cosmetics, protective equipment, wallets, furniture, items used in a trade or business, and rentals are not covered by the exemption and will be subject to their applicable taxes.  Interestingly enough, fabric, thread, yarn, and other such items purchased to make clothing are taxable.  So, this is not the time to make your own, but to get something already made!
Here's the 'official list' of items that are tax free in North Carolina during the weekend of August 5 - August 7 from the North Carolina Department of Revenue.  Also, a list of FAQ's they have put together, just in case you still have some questions.
If you are like me, unfortunately, you won't be able to buy tax free that brand new digital camera you've been looking at for a little bit.   Cameras are not included.  I also wanted to get a new iPhone.. but nope, that didn't make it to the list either.
You can find information about this and other similar events in the Triangle regularly on our website at
