As year end approaches, I am getting the Multiple Listing Services bills.  This made me think of the recent consolidation of hospitals ordered by the governor of New York.  Hospital provides life saving services yet they are being asked to consolidate.

So why do I need to belong to several services in order to to serve my clients?

Here are the reasons I would welcome a regional system.

1.  The MLS Sytems are all using different platforms.

2.  Not having to log into individual systems would save me time.

3.  I would spend a lot less on membership to the services.

4.  Uniformed MLS number would make it easier to help customers.

5.  With all the available technology a central database would make realtors operate more efficient.

So what do you think?

Great idea Jennifer, but I don't think it will ever happen.  To many privately owned local systems.  The closest we'll get to is IDX.  Even with that our local system will not share data.

Hi Jennifer,

I am from New Hampshire. We are a small state and back a long time ago we had at least 15 different MLS's and we finally got fed up and went statewide. We are the first state in the country to go statewide. I know we are a small state but Regional MLS's do work.

Push for it...

Thanks Jay

We only have one in the area where I work. It has all the areas where I work within reason.

You would love the MLS system that I use in Maryland and Northern Virginia.  Check out the market area, it's fantastic.  I love it.

Before MRIS, I belonged to 6 associations to have access to my market area.  We've had this system since about 1993-4.

The system actually covers more area than shown.  This is just Homefinders.com market area.

Lenn,  That is what I would like to see in my area.  With all the changes in technology I am sure these association will be forced to change.

Hang on for the ride, there is going to be a universal MLS for the entire country. It's going to be a public website that is going to eliminate the entire "listing side" of the deal.

Don't be mad at me, I'm just giving you a heads up. Get ready.

PS: I bet Zillow is the first to take a crack at this.
