Where do you draw the line between Individualism and Professionalism?

By
Real Estate Agent with Taylor Properties 500436

Ran into an old friend the other day and a few thoughts came to mind.  Hadn't seen this person in a more than a few I heart tatsyears and realized they'd been really busy in the interim.  They'd completed their Master's program (Yay, you!) and they'd been busy creatively expressing their individualism via tatoos and body piercings.  I counted at least 3 piercings and 2 tats.  That's what I could see.  Got me thinking about the bigger picture.

Where do you draw the line between individualism and professionalism?

Indeed, America is a melting pot, and although I have been know to quip, "I will sell this house to-day!" enroute to a showing or two, I'm pretty confident I'll never melt into that standard ideal of the American (Realtor) Beauty.  I do know how important it is for one to maintain one's individuality, though.

Perhaps I should have prefaced today's post with a simple statement.

I'm not your average Real Estate Agent.  I march to the beat of a different drummer.  Yes, there is a dichotomy at play here.  I'll give you that. I'm out there dealing with the public on a daily basis, yet I'm somewhat of a loner. You say tomato, I say, "gimme one of those red thingees that taste so good."

I like to do things differently just because I know there's more than one way to accomplish any goal. Sometimes, I like to do things differently just because. I'm a renegade.

So, where does one draw the line?

While I personally would not have an issue with someone in a creative field - musician, graphic artist, poet (you know, the artsy/fartsy type) - sporting tatoos and/or body piercings, I'm thinking I'd definitely do a double-take if my daughter's Pediatrician walked into her next well-child visit with a nose ring and a snake tat peeking out the top of a plumber's crack (muffin top, for the younger set).

I might have to question her professionalism (and thusly her ability to perform her "professional" job?).

What about you?  What if during your next visit to your Lawyer, Doctor, or Realtor; you noticed a tat or two?  Would you question that person's professionalism?

I don't have any tats, in case you were wondering.  Moreover, my only body piercings are of the standard ear lobe type.  No cartiledge, just lobe, 3 in each - 20-something, college thing (don't ask, I won't tell).

IMHO, if one chooses to get a tat, one should definitely choose an inconspicuous spot that would allow one to express one's individuality yet won't compromise one's professionalism.  That's a lotta one's, I know.

I just feel that the job situation is much too tight to have a decision-maker look at you sideways in an interview situation because they can't see beyond your paw print tat sitting atop the twins.  Like it or not, many companies frown upon visible tatoos and piercings. Just saying.

How do you feel about it? Do you have any tatoos or body piercings and how many?  Should the line between individualism and professionalism ever be crossed? Is there really a line? How do you strike a balance between the two?

HEY LANETTE!  Look at you all featured today!  There are what my hubby calls "stamps tramps" everywhere that eventually regret it or spend a lifetime wearing long sleeves and pants - even in the summer.  As for me - no tats, ear piercings, etc.  I have told all my friends kids who are as young as 16 with piercings everywhere and tats - it will be difference between a good job - and not.  But if you must go down this road - be discrete!

Perception can be a dangerous and disadvantageous thing.  Would I give a second look at the person I'm dealing with because of a number of tatoos?  Possibly and in some cases maybe even probably.  It's not something I'd be proud of. Even with that, I think it makes sense to put them in inconspicuous places just because it may have an effect on our prospects for jobs and our kids prospects for job if dealing with someone who is not open minded or in a field that isn't artsy/fartsy.

Hey, Gabs!  Look at me, indeed! Thank you, Feature gods!

Never heard the 'stamps tramps' moniker before but gotta say that's an interesting take on it.

Charita, I feel you on the part about not being proud of giving a second look, because, really, that second look is bottom line still a judgement of sorts, isn't it?

Harry S, that skull and crossbones thing really touches a nerve w/me.  Why is it on everything marketed to 8-10 year olds?  Seriously.  Why am I constantly bombarded with this symbol on t-shirts, backpacks, shoes and the like? And I'm really gonna buy this for my 8 yr old because they put a bow on the skull and make it pink? NOT!

Exactly, Harry D, I'll say it again, "Why stack the deck against yourself?"  There are more than enough people and circumstances doing that for you.

Morris, I hear you and...I'm not asking where that piercing was.  I'm just gonna assume : )

Thanks all for stopping by.  I was interested in your take on it and I certainly got some great feedback.  Now, where are the tatooed and pierced agents/brokers out there?  Don't tell me there are none!

'Cause I wouldn't believe you.

I got my first tattoo on my 18th birthday, in an easy-to-hide location. Since then I've added four more - all but one easily visible in a t-shirt and shorts - including a matching tattoo on the inside of each wrist. None of them are things I believe anyone could consider offensive or traditionally maligned subject matter, but the full spread is difficult to hide outside of a long-sleeve shirt, pants with socks and a couple of thick bracelets.

For me personally, part of the reason why I'm not afraid of negative backlash in personal or work environments as a result of my tattoos or piercings is because I believe that if somebody is going to judge me negatively because of how I choose to adorn my own body, I'm better off without them. In addition to my tattoos reminding me of stories and ideals and values I hold, they also remind myself - and others - that I am not the sort of person who will work at Mickey D's. I've never had a problem finding a job, yet I've also never bothered to try and hide my wrist tattoos or take out my nose ring for an interview. (This is to say nothing of the hair, where I think my profile picture says it all.)

I'm just being myself. Who else could I be? :)

Now, granted, I don't sell real estate. I'm not a lawyer. I do not do anything for a living which could, if done incorrectly, cause lasting physical damage to another person. But: if I wanted to, would the fact I have a nose stud make me bad at it? I don't think so. The fact that the sight of blood makes me queasy is more likely to mean I'd be a terrible doctor than the fact my skin isn't in "factory original" condition.

If someone chooses to make judgements and generalizations about an individual that has visible tattoos, that's their free choice, just as it was the choice of the individual with the tattoos or piercings to go out and get them in the first place. I don't inherently distrust people without visible body modifications: partly because I don't think it matters, and partly because you never know what's been scribed onto the skin you can't see.

I am so conservative my High School teachers used to think I was old fashioned (when I was just 15.) Definitely no tattoos for me. However, I draw the line at irresponsibility in any shape or form. A tattoo running the length of an arm or leg does not bother me. Be that as it may, don't be late two minutes because you won't see me again - tattoo or no tattoo.

What about Gang & Jailhouse Tats ? I guess we're not to make judgments about anything any longer.

I admit, I'm an old fart. I just remember my mother yelling to me as the big "green" bus pulled away from the induction center : "don't come home with a tattoo". Not, don't get killed or maimed but, don't come home with a tattoo. I respected her enough not to get one.

Lanette,  It certainly does make a difference, just like everything else...dress, hair, make up, expression.  Like it or not that's the way it is.  Would it make a difference for me?  Not necessarily.... that might be the renegade I am looking for.  I am drawn to independent thinkers.

I don't get upset when I work with people who are different. I look at what they know, how they do things etc. There was an agent in my first office that was always impeccable in her dress and appearance. But she was an empty vessel as far as brains and ethics....Other more plain-Jane agents who weren't spiffy dressers were far and away more qualified and trustworthy....

Tatoos are not something offensive to me even though I have zero body piercings (well two ear lobe but I don't even wear earrings) or tats.

I guess to each their own.  I did have a client once who had tat sleeves and the new construction sales agent balked at him.  Fully qualified buyer, isn't that all that matters?

So I'm a musician AND a real estate agent. Interesting situation. Seriously, I have 3 tattoos, one of which is visible when wearing shorts; all three when sleeveless and in shorts. I, being a little older at 41, realize the public perception. I have not utilized my 3 piercings since I've been in real estate. Part of me really regrets the conditions and "requirements" that society places on the individual.

By the way, I am contemplating the location and design of my next tattoo :)

That's what makes people so interesting. I have no idea what inspires people to get tats, or their hair cut really short, why they teeter around on 4-inch heels, or even have their nails done with those wild acrylic designs. I suspect they just want to feel good about themselves and that's their way.  As long as they don't make me do these things, I'm fine with all of it - except a ring through their nose or lip or other parts I can't see! That makes me cringe only because it looks like it HURTS.

In sales you have to be careful. People buy you before they buy with you. Even if they aren't offended by body art, they may question your judgement. THAT is a big deal.

We are judged by the public no matter what we do, I think it depends on what your niche market is... for instance fine estates and homes might not the be niche for an agent with tattoos

I think every one judges everyone else to some extent.  I don't have any tats and just ordinary pierced ears (3).  There are probably those that will judge in certain positions things like tats and piercings, right or wrong.

Hi Lanette. I guess I am just old fashion, but there is no place for pierce ears, tattoos, nose piercing, etc. in a professional setting like Real Estate, or Corporate America too. Unfortunately, people will still judge us by our outward appearance. I had a hard time seeing Morgan Freeman with ear rings at his age. But then again, that's Hollywood.

I'm old school so no tats for me. I have pierced ears to wear earrings but that's it. Maybe I'm wrong, but I can't imagine an agent with full-body exposed tattoos taken seriously.

This is a really good post. I enjoyed reading it. I feel like you do that you need to look into the future. Are you going to feel the same way about your self-expression at 40?
