Rubber Band or Wet Noodle--Which One Are You?

The housing market's current state is testing the mettle of seasoned and new real estate agents.  In the beginning many agents were in denial, then came anger and despair for some.  Others seized this time of adversity to call upon the best in them, in this worst market of modern times, to face the challenge head on.  Others gave in to disappointment and longer for what was, instead of accepting what is.  There is no denying it continues to be a wild roller coaster ride. The agents that ride it out will be rewarded for being resilient.

The way I see it the agent population separated into three camps:

The Wet Noodles:  They crumpled and grew soft when tossed into the swirling hot water of difficult times.  The market devoured them without a fight.  They failed, or refused, to adapt.  They moved on to greener pastures.

The Sideline Sitters:  These agents moved from the playing field to the comfort of a stadium seat to wait out the current market state of affairs.  They retreated to the sidelines and are waiting for a better time to re-claim their spot in the real estate arena.  It is unlikely their slice of the real estate pie will wait for their return. Nature (and other agents) abhors a vacuum.

The Rubber Bands:  These agents did not escape the market shift.  They did reposition themselves.  They called upon the resiliency, innovation, creativity and initiative needed to reinvent their business.  As the market of old morphed into something new, they restructured their business to adapt and survive.   It's that old Darwinian theory at work in modern times.  Adapt or fold.

A favorite quote in Hemmingway's Farewell to Arms addresses overcoming adversity.  "The world breaks every one of us and afterward many are stronger at the broken places."

I'm always amazed at the agents who announce on their blogs they "don't do" and then follow it with something major happening in our market.  Then they complain about their lack of business.  It's a DUH moment.

Great blog post. We all need to keep one thought in mind if you change you have a chance to succeed. I heard this a while back. I have chance to meet the growing demands of the market, and that is tough in this market in NY.

Norma -- excellent post(suggested).  This is a time for energy, a strong work ethic and lots of creativity.  Is it any wonder the number of active real estate licensees has decreased in the last couple of years?

Success is never guaranteed, but we must bring our best to the task every day, and that includes making adjustments to the ever-changing market.

Michael - I read this would be the year many agents finally throw in the towel.  On the other hand, those of us still here will undoubtedly benefit from our efforts.

Agents that don't change and adapt to each 'current' market will never see the return of 'Their Glory Days' as that's called history.

Adapt or fail.

I'm definitely the rubber band.  I adjusted my strategy many times over the last 4 years and continued to improve and expand.  All those agents who quit or took a break are going to leave a lot of opportunity when the market snaps back.

David - As a child I read the Laura Ingalls Wilder book series.  The mother character was always saying, "Where there's a will, there's a way."  I didn't have enough life experience to comprehend the words--I now do, and I apply it daily to my real estate efforts.

Norma,

Great quote by Hemmingway.  I often think of the trees who limbs get broken and they mend themselves, and do become stronger.  Very inspiriting. A

Alexandra - I've never had a broken bone, but I know it takes patience and time, but eventually it heals and the cast and crutches can be tossed--very freeing and much like coming through a difficult time and not only surviving by thriving.
