Don't Bring Your Open Containers to West Hartford Center!

I just heard about a new law in my home town of West Hartford, Connecticut that bans open alcoholic beverage containers.  Who knew with all the talk of the state budget problems and federal debt ceiling crisis that we had bigger problems-- open containers!

Fox News reports that residents have mixed reactions:

West Hartford Center and Blue Back Square have quickly  become the outdoor dining caWest hartford Diningpital of central Connecticut and apparently "pre-gaming" or the consumption of alcoholic beverages on the way to local restaurants and bars has gotten out of hand.  (News to me as I live a block from West Hartford Center and have yet to witness this problem!)  However, only seven states regulate open air liquor consumption so this issue is left to municipalities to legislate.

Does this mean that block parties will now be illegal?  Is it unsafe to walk to your neighbor's house with a glass of wine or a cold beer?  Not so, according to Mayor Scott Sliifka.  This new law is intended to apply to commercial areas like The Center, Blue Back Square, Bishop's Corner & Park Road Business District and not local residential neighborhoods.

As for me, I'll keep my open containers on the back deck by the pool.  What about you?

West Hartford is no New Orleans!  I find it interesting how there seem to be an effort to limit some of what makes West Hartford Center so appealing, like the open containers, the hours for open air dining.
