Government Is Not A Business-Too Bad It's Not More Businesslike
If this report is correct, you have to wonder about the competence of the managers of some federal agencies.
With all the talk about federal deficits, running out of money, and the potential for the collapse of our economic system, one has to wonder why would an agency lay off the people charged with collecting tax revenue from airline tickets?
In business, sales and collections staff would be a couple of the last places one would cut back in an initial round of layoffs. Revenue or top line dollars are the life blood of the operation. I have to assume the money coming in, as described in this report, about $200M per week, was far greater than the expense of the headcount needed to process. Thus one has to wonder, why is the government forgoing the collection of these funds?
A cynic might think this was done to reduce funds to the government to encourage Congress to take steps to end the stalemate and make a deal.
There's enough double-talk, and financial shenanigans, on both sides, to really cloud the issues. The government, especially one the size of ours, is a large and unwieldy beast. It just seems like many of the elected officials are more concerned about being reelected than getting the governments financial house in order.
For now I have to assume the CBS report on the FAA is correct in who is being laid-off. That seems to mean FAA managers are helping starve the flow of funds into government coffers. By the way, just because the people at the FAA are not there to handle the funds, it would seem that most of these operations are automated to some extent. The funds are coming from airlines and not individual taxpayers. Just because people are not there, why are the airlines still not obligated to pay the taxes?
If the IRS building in Austin burned, would we be able to avoid paying because the people are not at work. Something about this seems to smell. But then I'm a cynic.
I'm not cynical about helping you with your real estate needs though. Call me to help you buy or sell in San Antonio. And even better news, I have a network of associates around the country to whom I can introduce you if you need an agent in another part of the country.
