Government Is Not A Business-Too Bad It's Not More Businesslike

If this report is correct, you have to wonder about the competence of the managers of some federal agencies.

With all the talk about federal deficits, running out of money, and the potential for the collapse of our economic system, one has to wonder why would an agency lay off the people charged with collecting tax revenue from airline tickets?

In business, sales and collections staff would be a couple of the last places one would cut back in an initial round of layoffs. Revenue or top line dollars are the life blood of the operation. I have to assume the money coming in, as described in this report, about $200M per week, was far greater than the expense of the headcount needed to process. Thus one has to wonder, why is the government forgoing the collection of these funds?

A cynic might think this was done to reduce funds to the government to encourage Congress to take steps to end the stalemate and make a deal.

There's enough double-talk, and financial shenanigans, on both sides, to really cloud the issues. The government, especially one the size of ours, is a large and unwieldy beast. It just seems like many of the elected officials are more concerned about being reelected than getting the governments financial house in order.

For now I have to assume the CBS report on the FAA is correct in who is being laid-off. That seems to mean FAA managers are helping starve the flow of funds into government coffers. By the way, just because the people at the FAA are not there to handle the funds, it would seem that most of these operations are automated to some extent. The funds are coming from airlines and not individual taxpayers. Just because people are not there, why are the airlines still not obligated to pay the taxes?

If the IRS building in Austin burned, would we be able to avoid paying because the people are not at work. Something about this seems to smell. But then I'm a cynic.

I'm not cynical about helping you with your real estate needs though. Call me to help you buy or sell in San Antonio. And even better news, I have a network of associates around the country to whom I can introduce you if you need an agent in another part of the country.

Hard to believe that the powers that be would let any tax money slip through their fingers.  Even more unbelievable is that they will not come looking for that tax money when the tax collectors are called back to work.  I have never heard of a tax that is on the books being forgiven just because there was no one there to collect it.  I smell a rat, or is it a big cat looking at the rat getting ready to strike?  (and we want this type of manager in charge of our health care????)

Wayne...you, a cynic--no way. There are way too many folks out there who simply choose to close their ears and eyes so they need not deal with the realities that surround us.  A part of me wants to see August 2nd come and go--so that we can truly find out what this calamity; this disaster; this total melt-down of out country will really be.  As we have gone through this 3 other times and are still here; listening to the same squeaks of fear, you are not alone in your disbelief in the working or rather non-working of our governing prsons.
If yu are a cynic--you are in a pretty large grouping of intelligence at work among those who do question and look closely to the workings in Congress--WH.  have a good week.

Wayne--I think you are trying too hard to make sense out of a system that is full of nonsense. We just had a 3 week government shutdown in our state where there was millions in lost revenue to state parks, the lottery and several other businesses that have state employees and regulations. It has been resolved but still most Minnesotan's are shaking their heads at the lost revenue and nonsense that went on here. Now we continue to watch on a national level the same thing.
