Our office volunteered during this past weekend's Olympia Traverse relay event - and oh my gosh it was fun! Of course a beautiful sunny summer day at a park right next to Budd Bay kinda helps make it hard NOT to enjoy the day. And getting to watch the cyclists end their leg of the relay and the kayak and paddle boaters glide off on their part of the event - well let's just say at one point I had taken so many pictures I had to stop and erase some older ones to make room on my camera's memory card!
Part of our group's duty was helping wave the cyclists into the park and slow them down enough that they didn't wipe out on the right angle turns along the path to their finish chute. Toward the end of the race, we even tried to wave a few random bikers in until they explained they really weren't part of the event...
Some of our group was stationed at the finish chute for the bikes where they could help holler out the bib number for the timers to note the finish time for the leg and also to alert the paddler if it was a relay team so they'd be ready to go.
Watching those beautiful kayaks skim across the water was so mesmerizing that it's a good thing there were several of us at the road to take turns watching for the next bicycle to come into view.
And a couple of stand up paddle boats made for an intriguing way to complete the aquatic portion of the Traverse.
It was really nice to feel like we had helped our little portion of the Traverse run smoothly - and I think we all admired the hardy souls who participated either as part of a team or a soloist! The finish line was at Fish Tale Ale downtown Olympia - and participants and volunteers alike got to enjoy a nice cool beverage to finish up a really fun day.
