Okay, so you've decided to jump into the Wide Wonderful World of Blogging. I bet about now you're probably feeling the 'Agony of Defeat' a bit more than you are the 'Thrill of Victory!' Am I right?

 Well, don't get discouraged, Spanky. There's a learning curve here on ActiveRain, and we all go through it.

Allow me, if I may, to give you just a brief bit of advice on how to make your blogging experience more enjoyable and effective. My suggestions won't improve your SEO or Google page rank. Unlike the marjority of members on ActiveRain, I don't claim to be an SEO expert.

Today's Blog Tip for Rain Drips is entitled, "How to Sabotage Your Own Blog."

Now, you may be thinking, "Why would someone want to deliberately sabotage their own blog?" But you'd be surprised how many people do this, unknowingly and unintentionally. So many times people approach blogging like they do other forms of Internet marketing or even like they do more traditional print advertising. They feel it necessary to brand everything they create. Every blog post is crammed packed full of 'website' links, and 'contact' banners. There's so much self-promotional clutter squeezed into the article, there's little or no room left for any meaningful consumer content!

And why in the world would you put a link button in your post, disguised with some cool eye-grabbing graphic, that steals your poor, innocent reader away from your blog, and forces them to jump through a series of 'Fill-in-the-Blank' hoops, just so they can receive one of your canned articles on "10 Tips to Sell Your House?" 

I've got a better idea: Why not write a really exceptional consumer-oriented article yourself - one that conveys your own unique personality, your experienced, professional perspective, and your personal passion - then publish it to your blog. Insert some nice, relevant graphics that support the topic, but don't embed them with hijacking links.

 When consumers access your blog, they don't want to be kidnapped or bombarded with every conceivable means of promoting your company & services. That's why ActiveRain has furnished you with a 'Profile."

Consumers want you to educate and inform them. They want you to 'engage' them in meaningful conversation. They want to get to know YOU.

I guess, that in some respects, a good quality blog article is like a well-staged home. There's no distracting clutter!

Your picture is PERFECT! It's just so appropriate for describing cluttering posts that we've all at one point or other have been guilty of writing. 

I try to keep it simple...readable...but it's all a work in progress. Either way, it's satisfying to know that in the end someone is reading and someone is engaging.

Rich these are the same agents who have so much going on in their websites I get dizzy looking at them. My website is plain but I have been told how easy it is to use. My outside blog is a little snazzier but still basic. I think the fact that my traffic is doubling and so is the number of repeat visitors is as well tells it all. Sometimes plain trumps. Your photo looks like so many of these sites!

Hello Rich, Thank you for this post!  This is exactly the type of post I enjoy reading.  If I wanted to hear all about an agent or stager...I would visit their site and click on "about me".  Just your style and honest conversation tells me more about you than a paragraph about your background, etc. 

A little off topic but actually last evening I talked with my web guy and asked him if we should remove branding from my website entirely or at least that that is immediately visible.  What do you think about the difference between agent sites that are heavily branded and those that are a bit more immediate with what the visitor googled?  To me it seems to make sense for the visitor to immediately land on information based on their googled search and then have to click to find more about me than to land on me and have to click to find what they asked to find in the first place.  I think I may have it all wrong.....your thoughts?

Good post. I think that part of the problem is insecurity. A lot of people think that if they don't clutter their blog posts with a lot of links and other distracting items, it won't get noticed.  Quite the contrary, in my opinion. I find that the posts that are easiest to read, the most informative, and the most effective, are the ones that don't have a lot of clutter.

Kris - you're right. Even though there are no hard fast rules for blogging, there are practices that work. And consumers respond well to those practices. While there are some similarities between websites and blogsites, especially for the spiders, a good blog should allow and encourage two-way conversation. Too much self-promotion can limit or stifle that conversation.

Mary - if a consumer accesses your site, and the first thing they see is a HUGE picture of you taking up 3/4 of the page, then I think that's a bit self-centered. Branding is okay, but I think it should reinforce and support your niche or speciality. It may be difficult for you to amend your website to match search terms, unless you have a VERY narrow and specific term that you're shooting for. Otherwise, it might be best just to create a website where the primary feature is your blog, and everything else is secondary.

Mana - the same information is contained in your profile. Why be redundant? But as long as it isn't ALL the time, and it isn't OVERWHELMING the meat of your article. Where do the links take them? Away from your blog? I think the goal should be to KEEP them at your blog, and to keep them coming BACK to your blog.

Phew, you just answered Gary's question.  I try to link to other blog posts that pertain or if I have something on my site or another site to clarify.  I did personally complain about this in February when I saw it.  It has a lot to do with black hat or gray hat SEO I do believe and not ugly shameless self promotion as one would think.  IOW, They don't care how they are construed in the blogging world and care more what the search engines think.

One could carefully craft a wonderful blog and still have the same results but that would take too long.  They are looking for quick results and sustaining them.

Rick - yes, most of us DO begin our blogging efforts as a means of generating more business. But it's simply a matter of what blogging practices are most effective in achieving those goals. Think of it this way - when a telemarketer calls your house and starts reading from a script, what is your response?

That's the way it is when you use your blog as simply a place to dump your contact info. And yes, many of us do end up enjoying this venue. Obviously it takes a huge commitment to make blogging work. But so does just about any type of successful marketing.

This is a great post to read for someone new to blogging such as myself.  There can be a tendency to overdo things for our own benefit, not the readers.  It's best to Keep It Simple....if only that was easy to do:-)

Leigh - Links, in and of themselves, are not necessarily a bad thing. When they are inserted into the body of your article, and lend to the message you're writing about, they can be effective. I am talking about blatant self-promotion, annoying ads & banners, redundant contact information, etc.. It clutters out the meat and substance of what you're trying to communicate to consumers. I looked through your past blog articles. You're doing just fine!

Rich these are great tips - but - please be kind to the buttons and stuff - my PB (Principal Broker) requested me to put the equal housing logo on every localism post I do - along with my name, my title and the company name - the side bar was not sufficient - so I created the footer I use...... it sucks - but it is what it is.... and actually I get a lot of comments from readers about it.

Before this post, it was like the more I learned about how to improve the more complicated and less fun my AR investment became. I am relieved to know its okay to enjoy myself and just communicate without trying to compete with Hollywood or Las Vegas type window-dressing. Also, I thought I had read somewhere in Active Rain that it was not encouraged or even using your head to duplicate marketing information in your blog post. I began to feel I was wrong not to promote myself in post because so many bloggers are using every post to promote. So, thanks for clarifying that. Obviously, rating is meaningless right now, but you will always have the + sign over the highest mark.

I wish the animated cartoon look a-like characters would be banned. They just downright irritate me, no matter how good the blog is, or how much I like the blogger. (I've been wanting to say that for months now--how liberating)

RICH:  I agree that you shouldn't put links all over your posts trying to get people to leave the blog and go someplace else.  The only tool that I've used is a text box at the bottom of the blog called About The Author.  It gives some of my philosophy, services offered and basic contact information.  They won't see it until they've completed the article, so I'm not concerned with cannibaliziing my own blog.

Fran - I think it;s simply a matter of personal preference. But I think the greater issue is to respond to your readers. If someone takes the time to visit your blog and leave a comment, you should acknowledge that in some fashion.

I've not seen any banner ads on AR blogs. Are you mainly referencing outside blogs or here on AR?

As Thesa mentioned, I put copyright language with my name and my broker's at the bottom of all my localism posts in small type. That's so when the plagiarizers steal my material, there'll be a reference back to me. ;-)

Generally, I find posts with lots of links very difficult to read, plus, I don't like to have to go to other places to get the info. Takes extra time. I usually by-pass them. IMO, those type of posts are merely aggregators of info rather than being the "expert".

Rich, I agree. The public and AR community are on your post to read what you have to say. The reader knows how to contact you and know how to acquire your services. There is no sense it shoving it down their throats.

BTW thanks for commenting on my Localism post. You were telling me that I should to add more photos and personal info to spice it up. Where do you get most of your photos for your blogs? I have a decent photo library in my computer from photos that I have taken myself, but most of them are not great for my blogs.

Rich - well said.  The important thing is to provide useful information consistently.  I agree that too many gadgets and links can actually work against us.  These added tools also cause the pages to take a longer time to load so some consumer never make it to the site.

Actually, that is very true, I want the real estate market to do well, but I also noticed that while it was going hyper-sonic, the humanity was completely depleted and the service was terrible, no one cared and the paperwork was so often botched. Hopefully there were some lessons learned there, I think so, but I also believe they were learned during the last go around 10-years the prior and so, I hate to be a cynic, but I just hope that the next go around at least some will stand up and say. Let's not make that mistake again.

Meanwhile I am very much enjoying reading your take on the enjoy blogging thing, I think I am in full agreement, the plagiarism has to stop that is a must. Also folks should remember that putting up four or five line blog posts is not really serving their purposes, because when outside internet surfers stop buy, it looks less than professional and that sheds a bad light on their public image. Thus, they are doing themselves no favors. I think this is why, I am glad to see your series of artcles on this subject and it has prompted me to put some Blogging Thoughts and observations on my Blog as well. Thanks for everything by the way, I really like this opportunity and have been meeting people from all over the country, this is a pretty cool experience and I would like to invite others to do the same at the one and only Active Rain! - Lance

I couldn't agree more. My goal for the month is to write one blog each day. Hopefully during this time, I will be able to see a huge improvement between post #1 and post #31 (or 30?). There are so many fantastic resources here on how to write better, more effective and useful blogs. Glad you took the time to write this post!
