How Long Before the Office is Extinct?

Remember back when phones were hard wired LAN lines and you had to "dial in" to connect to the Internet? Things are a little different these days. Technology has evolved as fast (or faster) than people can adapt. With so many new tools at the disposal of the professional, when will the antiquated office space become extinct?

In this digital age it is easy for a real estate agent or any other business person to scan, fax, email, file, and store documents with a mobile phone! Web 2.0 bring two way communication to a whole new level. We can talk, text, chat, show, and more with the help of a computer and a decent Internet connection.

In the past Internet availability made it necessary for rural professionals to commute to the office. Now you can get up to 3MB, 5MB, and 10MB (approximate download) speeds via DSL through the phone lines. Furthermore, wireless providers are increasing their mobile Internet speeds making similar speeds available anywhere you can get signal.Tech savvy real estate agent winston salem

Is this the perfect storm that blacks out the world of physical office space? Imagine if large companies would collaborate, oversee, and mange employees from their home office? The cost savings would be tremendous for both the company and the employee.  The technology and infrastructure is already in place.

For the real estate professional it makes our industry mobile, streamlined, and efficient.  The technology is out there, use it and make everyone's life easier!

Personally, I believe the social interaction and competitive atmosphere of the office can be great for those who need to be driven. However, for the right person a mobile platform frees up a lot of time and makes them more productive.  Will the office go extinct? Probably not, but I would expect this to be coming trend for many professionals in the near future.

I still think people like to go to an office to see the agent and their atmosphere. The office does say alot about the agency. Yes I believe you can work from home, but that you need a base too.I still deal with people that do not have computers, no fax and snail mail is the only way. I think it depends on your niche.caimito

Hi Stephen,   Things are much more mobile these days.  I am willing to meet people to take a loan application outside of my office and will go to them to pick up paperwork.   It is definitely a different environment than having to go to the bank and sit behind the big desk to get a loan.  Some people would prefer to come and see me in my office.  I try to fit  my customer's needs.  I think I would look less reputable in some people's eyes if I just worked out of my home.  I prefer to have an office space to meet with people but enjoy the freedom to be able to move outside the office to originate loans.

Depending on how your work is structured and what brokerage your with a physical office can be a great tool for meeting with clients. Another advantage of course is the office equipment available to use without having to spend money on paper, toner, color ink, etc.

The problem is that the office, at least for me, is a huge source of companionship and also drive. When I go to the office and hear what other agents are doing (or how well their doing) I want to do more. Get more listings, close more sales. I think we'll move more to satelite offices but I don't think they will ever go away.

No, the office won't go extinct. And I won't have a robot to clean my house or a car that drives itself any time soon, either.
