Is Daily Blogging Bad?

The Gang of FourWhile I cannot be in attendance at Inman Connect San Francisco, I am following the Twitter stream on the event. I wish I could go, but I have to make hay while the sun shines. One tweet that caught my attention referenced a speaker by the name of Laura Roeder advising attendees to NOT blog daily, but to get out there and do business. Now, in fairness to Laura, there is no context to the sentiment, so I don't have the full picture. I'll offer my opinion with that caveat.

In an of itself, I think that blogging is a smart thing to do daily so long as it is part of a plan that includes a full dose of other work. I do post 30-40 times a month on various sites, primarily right here, and were I to cut back, it would not help me do more business, it would set me back. Now I'll be the first to say that if you are a new agent and all you do for business is blog, you have a problem. The same goes for agents who blog or hang out on Facebook to avoid other less comfortable work. That isn't smart. But all things being equal, I believe that blogging daily, if you have the inclination, is better than not blogging daily. So long as you are taking care of everything you should and have a workable plan, I am all for it.

I have never heard of Ms Roeder, but she has close to 15,000 followers in Twitter  and she has the feathers in her cap to be a speaker for Inman, so she must be quite credible. Her website says that she is a social media expert, and while her profile kind of makes me feel old, I respect her views. Her "about" page states that she has been quoted in the LA Times, CNet and been a contributor to a number of industry blogs.

Well, I outsell all but a few out of 7500 agents in my market, been in the NY Times, ABC World News, AP, AOL, and several other outlets, and I am on the board of a very forward thinking and large MLS. My blogging has played a large role in that stuff, and I say posting daily is good so long as it doesn't undermine other work. As I said to a colleague on Twitter, that's what the other 23 hours a day are for. So if you want to do it daily, just put out quality content, unless you live in New York. :)

I am going to follow Laura going forward because her blog and other writing strike me as quite on point, and disagreeing with her on this matter may be a non sequitor, as I was 2000 miles away when she made her presentation. I hope to catch her next time. In the meantime, I'll go back to selling real estate and blog about things other than blogging.

Why? do we blog?   what is the PURPOSE in blogging.

Blogging is one of the tools we use to score google points.   A complete social media plan includes a little facebook, blog, website, twitter, and anywhere else you can think to post your links, pretty links, to raise the visibility of your SEARCH status.

okay... So, in real estate, there are only so many buyers and our hope is they will stumble on to us in their search.  Seek information about a topic we wrote about in a blog  (be sure and be key word rich and loads of links to your website for deeper resources).  and ultimately choose us to purchase or sell a home.

I prefer quality over quantity.  I find it difficult to select, research and write a quality piece in an hour a day.  Frankly I struggle with the notion that most of it is not original, and most of the population doesnt care.

We can make noise...google SEO kind of noise, and hope we make more noise than the other agents in our community to get our rankings up, so that we get driven to the top of the search engines.   But once we get there, we still have to provide quality Service to our Clients.

Sometimes Social Media seems to be very narcissistic, and the most self important dribblers makes it to the top.  I dont know if I want to compete in that space.

As far as SOCIAL MEDIA EXPERTS...   Some are better at launching and branding themselves than others.  Many come out of the same internet schools teaching them how to be social media experts for $39.00/month, who then want you to buy their course for 39.00/month.    Then it becomes a game of WHO they KNOW, who will give them speaking engagements, Who will put their LINK on a blog somewhere for hundreds or thousands to CLICK ON, to raise their traffic to enhance their organic seo, along with much and often they tweet and blog, how effective they are at scraping the internet for sources of "contacts", and choosing the right contact rich groups that want to learn social media to "brand themselves".   So WE are their target audience.... do we buy it?

How much does it contribute to my income?  Where do my clients come from?  Social Media in my eyes is to expand and support...our sphere of influence.  So, I want to write something interesting for my sphere of influence, and hope they will share it with others.   Start small, write to a select few, become their top of mind and encourage them to share your site and resources with others.

FOLKS... REALTORS have been doing "social media" long before the computer driven era we are in now.  It is JUST A TOOL, like a post card, a letter, and advertisement, or a phone call, or the groups and meetings we used to attend...  It does allow us to do some of it from our computer.  It does allow us to reach a little further than we can drive in a day.. but it is just a TOOL,   and much of it... is just SO MUCH NOISE in the 101010101 world

Everyone has time to do things they enjoy - or that they feel are important.

And although I don't ask strangers about this, my son and I are the only people I know who don't spend at least 2 or 3 hours a day vegetating in front of a TV.

I use that time for reading, writing (including blogging) and giving myself a treat with a game or two of sudoku.

I enjoy blogging, but don't do it consistently enough.   I would if I got enough comments to make me feel that someone other than me is noticing what I do.    It's frustrating to get very few or no comments on something I thought was worth saying and then to see others get hundreds.    What's the secret?   For me, blogging isn't the problem; getting them read is my problem.   The ones that get noticed are local posts that bring attention to local businesses, events, etc., but the folks who thank me profusely in person, phone or email don't comment where it would count.

Having your blogs turn into business is the crucial part.  If the blogs never turn into a phone call than you should be doing other more proactive activities.

Haven't you also been interviewed by some credentialed folks? I'm not sure that I could blog everyday but there are plenty of paid bloggers that do just that. Can't see the harm unless you spew out the same nonsense over & over again.

Unfortunately most social media "experts" don't consider blogs to be "social" enough for them. My take is that you need to own the ultimate property that people are connecting to you with! (Sounds like real estate too!) If something changes in the terms of service on a recognized social media platform or it closes down then you haven't totally lost out.

Philip,  I think , for me, it is important that what you put out is QUALITY not quantity.  So if the 30-40 hours per month are putting out great content (like you do) I think it is time well spent.  And most importantly, your results back that up.  Good post.  Thanks.   Now, get back to work!  (chuckle)

Hi Phil,
I was actually in the presentation you referenced and the "blog once a week" comment was not meant to mean that blogging every day was a bad thing.

The topic of her speech was "Creating Compelling Content" and it was more directed to folks who do not blog regularly, who do not know what to blog about and are overwhelmed by feeling that they have to blog everyday to be successful - especially if blogging and writing are not their strong suits.

In that case, she suggested that setting an editorial calendar and blogging valuable content once a week is an attainable, reasonable goal. And, if you are not someone who enjoys writing, it would be better to get out there and do other things.

Personally, I would love to blog more frequently, but seem to only be able to do it about three times a week on average.

It really is about time management.  I am sometimes surprised at how fast the hours go by while blogging. I do my work first then blog.  sometimes it's hard to do that, though. Your post is very good and a good reminder.

Its all about time management. I try to blog every day, first thing each morning. If I have a meeting or other obligations and can't get to it for a day, I don't worry about it. It all depends on whats going on in my business at the time, but I can generally find the time to come up with a post throughout the day.

I don't know the context either, but I will say if I blogged every day I would waste probably 2-3 hours on it, which would certainly not be good for my business.  As is, AR sometimes sucks me in too long just reading and commenting!  But, if I had a list of things in my brain and blogging came easy, why not.  Perhaps she was just telling people that there is no need to if you aren't good at it or it takes a lot of time?

Everything takes time, perhaps she is right. What did people do that sold property 25 years ago. Well they were out, and my guess they were not blogging or even comment like we are now programed to do. Just my opinion.

Philip:  I agree with you that blogging every single day is a very important part of an overall business plan.  I am going to click on the link in your post... and get a feel for Laura's blog... just to see what she is doing.

There just must be some sort of reason why she feels daily blogging is not necessary.  But, then again... is she a Realtor... or just one of those self-annointed social media mavens ?

OK Philip:  Here are my impressions and my corrected answer to your daily blogging question.  First of all... this next bit is from the "don't judge a book by its cover" department.

When going to Laura Roeder's website and first seeing a picture of this young woman... she looks like she is still in high school.  Barely.  Then, going to her blog and watching the first video I encountered... she looked more like junior high, and honestly, she "looked" like she should be selling Girl Scout Cookies.  <I think those new lemon cookies are going to be great...>

Wow... was I wrong.  If Sister Mary HolyWater... my teacher in the fifth grade... were here... she would surely smack my knuckles with her ruler.

This young woman really seems to know her stuff.  And... I think I could learn a lot from her, from her website, and from her blog... which is accessible through a link/button across the top of her "landing page."

Now that I have checked her out... (LOL)... I can see why she might say that daily blogging is not all that necessary.  I say this because I realize that the purpose... or at least one of the purposes of daily blogging... daily blog-POSTING... is to give your readers a sense of your "permanence," and your "reliability."

That can be done by the dailing writing or videoing of blog posts... or, after seeing her site, by other things Laura does as well.  She seems to come at you from all sides... and I am saying that in a good way.

One of the many reasons to blog daily is to get folks in the habit of knowing there is a reason to GO to a person's blog... just knowing in advance that you will find something of interest there that will make you glad you came back... be that either because of something new, or something that is in one of the many nooks and crannies on her blog/website, or accessible through the many links to other good stuff she provides.

Laura seems to have so much to offer.  Sure, she makes me feel old, too.  But, then again... I AM old.  LOL.  Yes, Philip... she could be your daughter, or even my grand-daughter.  But... somehow she has managed to acquire and pack into her young years quite a bit of pretty good stuff.  (that's a technical term...)

So... to revise my answer to the question in your post... no, daily blogging is not a bad thing, but if it fits into your overall plan like it does in Laura's marketing plan... then no... daily blogging for someone like Laura, is not necessary.

By the way... I recommend her blog and her website to anyone reading this post.

Philip... really... thank you for this post.
