Tucked just off of Lincoln road on Michigan Avenue is a white and airy space with the dessert counter being the main focal point.  When I first walked into Ice Box Café I was immediately drawn to their claim to fame…a case of cakes, ice cream cakes, brownies, cookies and specialty dessert bars. If you can get past the dessert case you can choose to sit either inside or outdoors, or even grab a slice of dessert to go, I decided to dine outside for a little people watching.

I promised myself I would eat food before dessert and was pleased with the variety of the menu. For starters I had serrano ham flat bread, which was a good size for a few people to share. Next up was the Icebox Burger — the beef was juicy and paired nicely with the manchego cheese and aioli. The burger was served up with sweet potato chips & mixed greens which I thought was pretty nice & a more healthy option than fries. Seems like there were a lot more healthy options on the menu such as kale and quinoa which I thought was pretty nice and everyone was satisfied with their order. Vegetarians have options at Ice Box… meat can be substituted for tofu in several of their dishes.

Ice Box is definitely one of popular places among tourists and south beach condo residents for brunch on Sunday, or a simple, delicious espresso, latte or the like thereafter. The brunch menu is frequently changing, so it’s hard to recommend a specific dish.  However, the crab eggs benedict is fresh and tasty.  The stuffed peach french toast was scrumptious, and the oatmeal is the best I’ve ever tasted.  So light and fluffy, I have absolutely no clue how they make it so much better than anyone else.

After enjoying my meal I absolutely always save room for dessert. The desserts look amazing…so many options! I stood in front of the case for twenty minutes trying to decide what to order. The waiter was very helpful and even allowed me to sample a few slices before making my decision. I finally decided on the chocolate “Bomb” cake claimed by Oprah to be the “best cake in America.”  Here is the exact description of this cake: Layer of dark chocolate, creamy cheesecake brownie and chocolate mousse filling, dark chocolate ganache. Is your mouth watering yet? Well it should be. The description doesn’t do “The Bomb” justice. It is absolutely delicious. It is by far one of the best cakes I’ve ever tasted.

In summation, Ice Box makes a nice spot to sit a grab a coffee and slice of cake, in a causal environment with friendly service. The recently opened a counter in the north terminal of Miami International next to Gate D8 so you can enjoy the cakes at home and on the go!
