Hi,

Ihave been reading about SEO methods, making sure that the title and keyords and description all relate. That these are relevant makes good sense. I am struggling with conflicting reports from the various online Meta tag analyzers that "Title too long". "Title is great"; "meta tag too long","meta tag too short"," description contains too many words"," description should contain more words".All these for the same site analyzed by several Meta tag analyzers.

Where can I find out what the optimum is for these things?

Thanks, Mike.

Hi Mike,

Great question, there realy isnt an optimum since it is constantly changing, I too have come across conflicting reports. It seems these free reports are always a catch for someone to buy another of their products.

In general i have experienced that if you go to the top websites out there and then look at how they are doing it.

If you click on tools then on page source you can find a wealth of information on how other websites are handling this issue.

Cheers

I would suggest keeping the title as short as possible to your main keyword, say under 100 characters. Description I would try to keep around 200 to 250 characters. You will find conflicting suggestions depending on the seo resource. I wouldn't  worry too much about the description, but the title is very important. Also, you might want to tag your posts as well (think meta keywords). Again, keep them short and relevant, less is more. -Charles

Take a look at Mary McKnight's blog for some great info. Click on 'meta tags' in the Tag Cloud in the right-hand margin.

Thanks for the mention, John.

The benchmark tool for determining meta tag value is  Widexl.

There are plenty of other tools out there for meta tag analysis, but I feel that is that most accurate and easy to understand.
