It's official like a ref with a whistle.

It was announced today about 5:10 pm EST that Whole Foods will be opening a $10.7 million, 21,000 square foot store in Midtown Detroit in 2013. Whole foods chose Midtown because it has the highest rate of resident income per acre at $231,961. Midtown is definitely up and coming and has a lot to offer young professionals and seasoned professionals alike. If you don't know much about Midtown I added some facts below:

The Midtown area is a general mixed-use neighborhood, containing an accumulation of structures representing the successive waves of development that have transformed the area multiple times since it was first platted. The neighborhood is dominated by the thoroughfare of Woodward Avenue, which runs north and south through the heart of Midtown. Midtown can be roughly divided into six general areas:[2]

  • Wayne State University neighborhood - north of Warren Avenue and west of Woodward Avenue.
  • Art Center (or Cultural Center) neighborhood - north of Warren Avenue and east of Woodward Avenue.
  • North Cass (or Cass Farms) neighborhood - between Warren Avenue and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and west of Woodward Avenue.
  • Detroit Medical Center neighborhood - between Warren Avenue and Mack Avenue and east of Woodward Avenue.
  • Cass Park neighborhood - south of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and west of Woodward Avenue.
  • Brush Park neighborhood - south of Mack Avenue and east of Woodward Avenue.

When I 1st wrote the blog about this topic earlier today, I had a semi skewed view of the whole ordeal. I'm not 100% sold on the idea just yet but thanks to Dave from US Mortgages comments, he opened my eyes to the creation of jobs and promotion of healthy living, that not only Detroit needs but the whole state of MI. It truly is exciting no matter how I feel about it, I hope the synergy of all the good happenings keep going and going. Over the years many Detroiters have lost their pride for the city but projects like this, the Detroit Works Project and the move downtown incentives will give them the fire they need to get up and start applying for jobs again, starting their own businesses and living the American dream.

A bit of advice to my mom and pop stores, now is the time to put that idea to use that you had in the back of your head. Now is the time to find new, exciting and creative ways to keep your customers coming back regularly. People are going to stop in Whole Foods here and there but make sure they continue to visit your store and provide them with a great experience.

Harry, it is good news for the community when something like this happens, and the local stores have to differentiate themselves by their offerings or their service or both...
