TROPICAL STORM DON ENTERS THE GULF

Models

As we see our first named tropical storm in the Gulf of Mexico, it is always a good reminder of what to do to prepare in the event a tropical storm, depression or hurricane comes your way.  Waiting until the last minute is not a wise thing to do.  Get cracking now in order to prepare for a storm this season.

After what the Houston area went through with Hurricane Ike a few years ago, most of us around here take the warnings very seriously.  No electricity, gasoline, phone service etc. for many weeks was a sober reminder that these storms can cripple a city as large as Houston in no time.

It is too early to know if this storm will come towards Houston yet it isn't too early to prepare.  Here are some basics to do right now:

  • Stock up on water, flashlights, batteries, candles and matches.
  • Purchase a storm radio.
  • Non-perishable food and drink items.
  • Have prescription medications filled and up to date.
  • Update your medical supplies and first aid kit.
  • Have a good, working chain saw.
  • Choose a room in the home away from windows as a temporary shelter.   Stock with blankets, pillows and supplies.
  • If you are going to leave your home, decide way in advance where you are headed and make sure you give yourself plenty of time to head out as the roads become choked.
  • Take plenty of water and supplies in your car if leaving in the event of heavy traffic.
  • If planning on leaving, let your neighbors know where you can be reached.
  • If your home is on the market, call your agent and let them know your plans if leaving.  Know how to reach your agent and that they have all of your contact information as well.
  • Coolers for ice and food.
  • Small bar-b-que pit for cooking.
  • Lighter fluid and charcoal.
  • Paper products and plenty of trash bags.
  • Mosquito repellent and bug spray.

This is only a partial list.  For a complete list click here

We need the rain but all of us who live in Hurricane prone areas know that these storms are serious business.  Be prepared and be safe!

Great advice Paula, and I am sorry for the direction of the storm, but relieved at the same time, as the West Coast of Florida is not in the danger zone.

It does look like this one will for sure come in to Texas.  Where is the big question.  Being prepared now is key.  We were without power for 2 weeks after Ike.  Simple things like charging your cell phone, clearing large trees from the driveway and streets, having plenty of food to cook over gas stoves or on the grill, plenty of paper products, etc. were all things that became a challenge.  As an agent, having my client list and phone numbers handy was a blessing.

Great advice Paula. I do hope if the storm hits, it results in some much need rain, and nothing more.

I'm with Scott! We need the rain so badly, that a tropical storm is sounding pretty appealing. :o/

I hope Don goes away and dies in the Gulf!  On a positive note we have had rainstorms every afternoon.  Although we needed the rain the mosquitos are not welcome and I have been wearing rainboots this week showing property in the showers!

Paula, this is a great post about a serious situation. Good information, however I do like it better when you are a trouble maker and stir things up LOL A very sweet trouble maker however...

Thanks Gerry.  Now I am just allowing Mother Nature to churn things up a bit.  Snaps everyone back into reality.  See my latest post today about preparing for a storm as a real estate agent.  I learned a lot after going through Ike that I thought that I would share with everyone.  Had I not experienced Ike, I would have never thought about some of these things.  Hopefully we will just get some much needed rain out of this.

Paula

When I used to live in Florida and Texas, hurricanes are a fact of life. Lived through some of the worst, Truly admire people's resilience.

Regardless of where we live, there are natural disasters that are bound to slam our area. But we pick ourselves up and keep on truckin'
