Our Better Angels

I don’t know about you, but sometimes I find myself conflicted. In studying God’s word through the Bible, I often times think of my faith in terms of ancient history.

I have to keep reminding myself that God continues to work through us…and there are people among us who carry on God’s message…even though it is not being recorded as Scared Scripture.

All of us know people, who by their actions and words, remind us that God is in our midst each and every day. These people; by what they say, in books they write, and by the things they do…teach us that our God is a Living God. I often remind my children that I think that life is God’s teachable moment with us.

I am grateful that my parents were excellent teachers and role models to my brother and me. I have been to places, and have been in situations; where that is not the case. My parents gave me a solid foundation upon which I was able to build my house of faith. Many aren’t so lucky. Many times, children are faced with not only building their own foundation…they must rebuild things their parents tore apart.

I am grateful to my wife of 40+ years. She has been such a blessing in my life. She has given me more than I deserved, and loved me when others would have found me unlovable. Her unshakable faith has inspired me to be a better man, and a more spiritual being. There is no way I could ever repay her for the times her faith kept our family together, and functioning…long after my faith had given out.

I am grateful to a boss I had 30 years ago, whom I watched die with grace and dignity. He had terminal cancer, and yet he showed up every day for work and was an inspiration to us all. The strength and courage he demonstrated was a testament to his faith in God. It’s amazing how much you can learn about living from someone who is dying.

I am grateful for a dear family friend…Nancy Cameron. Nancy started an adoption agency in Brazil, called Limiar. Limiar was the agency we used to adopt our son, David. Nancy started Limiar during the time her husband, Stuart, ran a plant for Goodyear in San Paulo.

Nancy, as the wife of a very influential businessman, could have elected to fill the role of the traditional executive’s wife, and limit her involvement in Brazil to tending to her family, and attending cocktail parties with her husband. Instead, she saw the poverty in Brazil and the cost of that poverty on the children…and decided that she couldn’t ignore what was before her.

Nancy studied the foreign adoption regulations and lobbied officials to allow adoptions outside of Brazil. She built an organization, and she started an orphanage…and because of her courage, thousands of lives changed for the better.

I am sure, when you reflect upon your own life, there are people…past and present…who you felt were sent by God to provide you with your own teachable moments.

I would like to offer you a suggestion-take an accounting of your life, and send a thank you letter to those still living, who pointed you in the direction of Christ. Let them know that their life made a difference in yours. You will be amazed at how much joy you will bring to your better angels.

Thomas, as I grow older I too begin reflecting on those who came into my life and made a difference. My wife would have to take top honors(after Jesus Christ). I am featuring this on spiritualrain.

Thank you Thomas, I too am so grateful to have had Christian parents that not only made sure we attended church as children, but also lived their lives by faith, studying Gods word and praying each day before us (my brother and sister) every day of their lives. I will never forget their love for each other, for us their children and for Jesus Christ
