"The Allure of the Automobile," gets its power from the Portland Art Museum. Guest Curator Ken Gross wanted to celebrate the essence of 20th century design on wheels. Therefore, he convinced top car collectors and other museums to loan him their most prized models.
"We have cars from collectors who never loan their cars out," says Portland Art Museum director Brian Ferriso. Organizers hope "The Allure of the Automobile" will draw people who normally wouldn't visit a museum.
Some of the beauties on display include a 1953 Porsche 550, a 1937 Bugatti Type 57S Atalante and a 1937 Hispano Suiza H-6C "Xenia" Coupe.
Perhaps, one of the most exciting cars in the exhibit is Steve McQueen's, uber - cool 1957 XK-SS Roadster. The car was sold at auction in 2003 for $1,100,000.
