SML’s Historic Highlights

Smith Mountain Lake isn’t only a modern day paradise, it’s an historic treasury. Its location in southwestern Virginia makes it rich in historical persons, places and events. Residents and visitors of SML are within a half-day’s drive of several fascinating historic places like Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest, the Homestead Resort, Historic Williamsburg, Virginia, and Winston-Salem, North Carolina’s Old Salem Museums and Gardens. Even closer to Smith Mountain Lake are several historic monuments that draw visitors from all over the state, country and world. The National D-Day Memorial is a one-of-a-kind monument offering both an educational and sobering tribute to World War II history and heroes. The family-friendly Booker T. National Monument is just minutes from the Westlake area of Smith Mountain Lake. A charming account of the life and person of Booker T. Washington, the national monument is a beloved part of the community. On the Franklin County side of the lake, the Blue Ridge Crooked Road begins in the quaint town of Rocky Mount, taking visitors on a journey through Virginia’s musical heritage.
