Oh No Porcupine! Amherst NH porcupine dog

Our grand-dog came to visit this weekend and he decided he needed to go out around 330 this morning.  I let him out and heard a bark yelp and at first thought, uh oh is there someone out there that just hurt Buster?  I went out and heard him making wet slurping sounds and I knew, I just knew what happened.

He came when I called and there was his sweet Boxer nose all covered with porcupine quills.  And he is in distress.

We had three agents at our office over the past month that had the same experience so I knew there was a 24 hour Emergency Veterinary Hospital in Manchester and gave them a call.It is the Southern NH Veterinary Referral Hospital and boy were they great, they  took us right in.  Buster went nighty night and was back out in less than an hour.

Thankfully he didn't bite at the porcupine and didn't have them in his mouth.  Buster does the Boxer thing, he pokes with his nose when he wants to investigate, he always makes me giggle when he pokes my stomach with his big square nose and I know that's JUST what he did with this porcupine.  The vet said it was a baby based on the size of the quills.....OK where's mama and his siblings?

After we got home my husband said, we should have taken a picture of Buster.  I was too worried about the big boy at the time, I really felt for him.

As much as this is about poor Buster and his porcupine encounter, let's get a plug in for another great reason to live in Amherst NH, access to 24 hour veterinary care!

I am so thankful for access to the 24 hour Emergency Vet Care in the Amherst NH area.

Poor Buster, that's quite an ordeal Rene, and not exactly what you wanted to be doing at 3:30 in the morning.  Glad he's okay...............I have a feeling today is going to be a low-key day for all involved.

Rene - I was on a hike up the Delaware Water Gap on a Sunday when my girlfriend's dog went after a Porcupine. It was horrible - the quills were in his mouth, through his tongue and all over his face. We ran down the mountain (a half mile) to the car and started calling emergency vets until we found one open. It was one of the most disturbing things I've ever seen and Debbie and I couldn't stop crying - Bear, her pup, couldn't even close his mouth. He need surgery and they removed over 200 quills! He was fine a few days later, but I feel for you and Buster - it's a horrible thing to happen to your dog. Best to you and Buster!

Good morning Rene. What a tough story to read. I am glad Buster is OK now and that you were able to get him care quickly. I have three babies and a fourth I'm fostering. Animal pain is very distressing. I hope you have a better day today.

Glad Buster's ok but that sounds like an awful experience!  We've had to use emergency vets only a few times but SO glad they were there when we needed them!!!

Hi Rene, how sad as well as painful for Buster.  Growing up in the country in PA. I saw this several times with our dogs and it is terrible.  Glad you were home and able to get him to the emergency vet right away.  Give Buster a big hug from me.
