This is week two of our stroll through ActiveRain's Blog Archives...

                     Ben Kakimoto

Above are some of the "Faces of ActiveRain" that make up the community, contribute and share their knowledge!  (Hover over each thumbnail photo to see their name.  Each one is mentioned in this post.)

7/11/06 -

After being inspired by a post Kristal Kraft wrote in which she mentions the mistake some blogging newbies make in stuffing keywords into the tags section, technology strategist Jason Ungos wrote a post on "Blogging and Tagging Effectively" -- well worth reading, as was his follow up post the next day, "Effective Blog Tagging".  He also has a great real estate technology blog outside of ActiveRain filled with good information.

Ben Wiseley, the somewhat camera shy ActiveRain programmer, provides two links to great articles on social software that make for interesting reading... even if only to skim through.  That I'm aware of, the mysterious Ben hasn't stuck his head out from behind his book yet, but I'm hoping he'll make a showing someday... unlike Wilson, the neighbor on the TV show 'Home Improvement' who never allowed viewers to see his mouth.

Doug and Kathie Whitehouse asked a question that was undoubtedly on many ActiveRainer's minds... What are the long term goals of the site?

Charles (another camera shy member), who writes on behalf of his wife, Jacqulyn Richey, provides some good information about "Real Estate Websites and Copyright Infringement".

Kim Hughes, a virtual assistant to some well known top producers throughout the country and one of the first VA's to join ActiveRain helps you answer the question "Do You Need a Real Estate Virtual Assistant?" and if your answer is 'yes', read her list of "What to Look for In a Virtual Assistant".  If you're looking for one, there are almost 90 real estate virtual assistants here on ActiveRain.

7/12/06 -

Bryant Tutas (a.k.a. Broker Bryant) wrote about range pricing.  This post is still generating comments long after it was published!

If you read blog posts on ActiveRain regularly, you're bound to notice that every so often a theme appears around the same subject.  The first of these "themes" seems to have appeared less than two weeks after the introduction of blogging on ActiveRain. Doug and Kathie Whitehouse wrote "Photos vs. No Photos" and Kristal Kraft further validates their stance in her post, "Photos are of Utmost Importance" while Ben Kakimoto follows up the next day with "Speaking of Listing Photos...".  This theme conveniently offers me the opportunity for a shameless plug for the ActiveRain MLS Issues group, which I founded.  If you have written any post(s) dealing with the MLS or MLS-related issues, I hope you will join the group and add your post to our collection.

R.J. Paperman wrote a series of posts titled "Learn How To Better Utilize Your Computer" where some members may find useful information relating to e-mails, Internet security and search engine placement. Here are Part 2a, Part 2b and Part 3 in the series.

7/13/06 -

Mollie Wasserman tries to provide some perspective to today's home sellers in "Pricing Your Home to Sell in a Softer Market".  Some of you may recognize Mollie as the author of "The Real Estate Internet Warning" which you can view about midway down her homepage and use as long as you give her credit (see bottom of homepage).

Angus Woodbury (a.k.a. "Moo") obtained his Accredited Staging Professional (ASP) designation so he can mooove his listings faster and for more money.  Did you know that over 200 home stagers are members of ActiveRain?

7/14/06 -

Mark Flanders, one of many loan officers on ActiveRain, offers up a great list of "Do's and Don'ts While Your Loan is in Progress".

Donna Harris (another Realtor with the ASP designation) asks "How many homes is too many to view at a time?" and gets a variety of answers.

7/15/06 -

For anyone who desires to increase the amount of comments on their blog, Bill French suggests you listen to the "voice of the customer" and provides some good resources.

Paul Sullins offers up some good advice on "Improving Your Blog Entries".  Paul passed away unexpectedly on August 2nd (at age 45) while going beyond the call of duty on behalf of a customer, which is what makes his last blog entry (written the day before he died) a bit prophetic and makes me wish he'd taken the last sentence of it ("Stay COOL!") to heart.  It came as no surprise to me when I read that at the time of his death, Paul was the current "Realtor of the Year" for the Wilmington Regional Association of Realtors.

By mid-July, the number of consumer-oriented blog posts had increased quite a bit.  If ActiveRainers want to see an example of a consumer-oriented blog filled with lots of local content, a visit to Lawrence Yerkes' blog, titled "For the Southern New Jersey Region and Beyond!" is a must.  Another good example is Linda Slocum's "Santa Clarita Real Estate News and Updates".

That's it for this edition.  If you missed the first edition of "ActiveRain - The Early Days", I invite you to read that one, too.  Please remember that if I did not include you/your post here, it's very possible you may find you/your post will be mentioned in an upcoming edition.

...and if you are not a member of ActiveRain yet, what are you waiting for?...

Leanne! How cool to come home and find your gorgeous face!  And on top of that this unbelievable post. The first thing I did after reading it all was to go into Jason Ungo's posts and briefly look at key tag questions; this is something I have been mulling for two days!  You rock of course: -)   I can't wait to check everyone out!  Wonder woman, gorgeous, intelligent and that's our gal Lexy!

Leanne I was reading another blog and noticed yours with your picture... I know I had seen it at some point because I recognized it as you but I think you've always used the other picture on your RT blog haven't you?   Great series, thanks for doing it.

Leanne, totally off topic, but I love the picture of YOU on your profile now!

As for the post, whew, I love going back and seeing how it all began.  When I first joined AR, I went and read these early posts to get an idea of what this place was.

wow..... Leanne....  I was going to say... I thought I read this before. But then noticed what you wrote at the end, about the first one that you did. So, you are going to do a week to week series?  Wow.... a lot of work.

So... getting back to the topic. Thanks for the hard work of putting this together. Especially for the fact that I have been on Active Rain since October 1st.... thanks again.

Kristal - the research it takes to write these posts provides me with good information and helps improve my writing so it's worthwhile.  I have noticed that very few blog posts during the "early days" got even just one comment so it definitely must've been challenging to continue with it.  I'm curious... when changes were made to notify us of comments, did you have to go back to your old posts to check the "notify me of new comments" box or had that been done as part of the new feature?

Jay - it's always sad, to say the least, when we lose one of the "good guys".  His spirit lives on in our memories, however.

Bryant & TLW - Time-consuming, yes, but I don't read each and every post from the "early days"... I read the title & summary format to decide whether it would be a good "fit" for my series.  Those that I think have the potential to be a good "fit" are clicked on and I read the entire post (along with comments). About half the time, it is a good "fit", and I include it.

Marti, janeAnne - thank you... I'm trying my best to make the "trip down memory lane" worthwhile and informative for readers.  Did you ever think that we'd be referring to something that happened less than six months ago as "the early days"?  That's the Internet for ya' and I think the title really fits the bill in this case.

Carole, MMc, MF, Dena, Margaret, Bonnie, TLW, Jeff - You guys sure know how to make a girl blush!  :-)

Leanne ~ I don't recall exactly when the "notify of comments" box was added, but it seemed like at least a month passed.

In the beginning it was more of a "free for all" than the sharing and commenting we see today.  We were all cruisin' for points...

The commenting was unlimited, so some of the comments (from certain folks) were spam type.

Kristal - boy, am I glad those things have changed!  What a convenience it is to be notified of new comments.  Before they stopped allowing us to see other member's point summaries, I checked those of some of the early members (who had many, many points) and it became clear that some of the early birds made out like bandits with regards to points considering how easily they were earned and how generously they were given out.  Oh, well... I guess it'll balance out in the long run.

Leanne ~ yes I am thankful for most of the changes here on AR. I sincerely doubt I would have stayed interested for very long without the comments and friendships created here.

As for making out like bandits, yes that is probably true, but then remember we pioneers are the ones who built the foundation of blogs.  We were guided by the creators and encouraged along.  When something wasn't working they changed it.  Sometimes things were changed and we didn't even know it.

Kristal - without a doubt, the friendships created here are a big part of what keeps members coming back to the site.  It's really interesting sometimes to see the amount of interaction going on, and you get to know a good mixture of people (agents, mortgage people, home stagers, virtual assistants and more) all under one roof.

Leanne ~ Thinking back AR was totally 'competitive' in the initial stages.  Now it's become more of a 'community'.  With the advent of Groups, eventually it will be move 'collaborative'. I wonder what the  next level will be...

Is it just me, or did Leanne also take the time to really nicely frame the portaits at the top of the post; I mean, so much went into this and she took the time to organize the portaits so they were asthetically pleasing!  Lexy, you are the woman! I'm glad you are doing this it's awesome - I've been inspired to go back and read more early posts; ty!

I didn't do anything special to the portraits... just left a couple of spaces between each one so they wouldn't just blend into one another.  I like to be creative and my AR blog allows me to do that to some exten.  Now... if they'd just include color & font size features to the toolbar so I could easily make headlines bigger than the regular body and draw attention to key items.  Ideally, I'd prefer to be able to access the HTML.  I can dream, can't I?

I'm happy to draw a bit of attention to other bloggers, some of whom have not blogged in a while.  Maybe we can lure them back in by leaving comments on their posts as you did, Carole.

Thanks, Craig... it does take time to sift through all the entries, pick some and then put the post together.  My next one in the series will be coming out before the end of the week.
