What lies beneath? No I’m not referring to the movie were Harrison Ford plays the adulterous, murderous husband. I’m referring to the crawlspace your house is sitting on. Most people have no idea what’s going on in their crawlspace. They’ve never been down there and have no intentions of going down there.

Now stop and think about this. The crawlspace is the area between the ground and the first floor of your house. The air quality in your crawlspace affects the air quality in your house. The very supports that your house is built upon are in your crawlspace. Now take a look at the picture below.

What do you see? Would you feel safe in this house? Is this the air quality you want your family to breathe? Of course not, but without a home inspection how would you know “what lies beneath”?

It’s just one of those things you really do need to know before you buy or even rent a house. I couldn’t find one single solid piece of wood in that entire crawlspace.

That there is one perty crawl!  And it's obvious that different people at different times have known that there are problems there and tried to fix them!  And for sure, the nose knows.

Jay the wood was actually dry rotted. I have never seen wood just dry out and rot like that. Almost everything I touched just broke off or crumbled.

Suesan, before I got into home repairs, I had no idea about home inspectors or what they did.  Now having been in this side of construction for the last 5 years (6 prior to that in commercial construction), I would recommend that people get inspections of their own home, even if they AREN'T selling.

That way at least we know what to fix!

I was in a house that looked amazing, but for some reason I always had a problem breathing in it. During the inspection, the inspector found mold, mold and more mold under the house. Which explained everything.
