Cake Anyone?  Carroll County, Maryland

Several years ago I took a cake decorating class through our local parks & recreation Cake Anyone? Carroll County, Marylandprogram so that I could make cakes I could be proud of for family & friends. I was inspired by my mom, being the terrific mom she was. When I was little she would make the greatest cakes for my brother & I by cutting sheet cake and piecing it back together to form dogs, rockets and other cool children's birthday cakes.

Well, I tried moms way, even used the cake decorating book she had saved all those years just for me. It was an epic failure. My children's cakes always looked as if they had made them themselves. Striving to be as terrific a mom as I had been raised by, I took a class to improve my skills.

With a page out of the Cake Bosses book, here is my latest creation and the first one Claire helped with. Cake, rice crispy treats and butter cream icing. A Happy 50th Birthday “Over the Hill” cake for our dear friend Susan. We had a great time making it!

These can be a lot of work.  I always have trouble with the icing sticking to the cake when trying to spread it on the layers.  It rips it apart and gets it all mixed together.  It looks like you've had much better luck with yours.

My mom just gave me a bunch of cake decorating stuff, taking a class sounds like a really good idea!  How long did it take you to do this cake?

Doug ~ exactly my problem, it looks as if you rolled the cake in crumbs. It has a lot to do with the icing you use. Canned store bought icing doesn't work for me. I use homemade butter cream and start with a crumb layer of icing, once that's dry you can add the final coat of icing a lot easier with out all the ripping. : )

Liz ~ It's so much fun! It took about 2 hours of baking and prep work, making the icing which we did Friday night. The decorating took about five hours because I don't do it often enough to be speedy. My instructor could put a cake like this together in an hour and a half.

Diane, it looked wonderful, you made and decorated a great cake. I don't know how to bake a cake, I tried once, middle of the cake sunk.

Too funny Diane!  I took cake decorating to for the same reasons.  I haven't made a fancy cake since probably a year after I took the class!  Oh well, it was fun while it lasted.  Your cake looks great though so keep up the good work!

Diane, Great job on the cake, I am sure your friend was thrilled.

I have often thought about taking a cake decorating class.  It's on the list along with singing and dancing lessons, organization class, sailing lessons....my list is long, good for you for actually using what you learned!
