I love this Mexican Bird of Paradise plant... it only shows it's green coat during the fall and winter... but if you spend your summers in the heat, you are rewarded with these fiery red-hot blooms! It is also very popular here in the Palm Springs area!

I like to be proven wrong - particularly when I have the opportunity to learn great new things because of my lack of knowledge. When I first moved to Scottsdale, AZ, I thought that landscaping and plants would be limited to cactus and succulents with very little color. Was I wrong.
One of the most vibrant plants in the Arizona desert landscaping is the Mexican bird of paradise. It's vibrant orange and red and yellow blossoms is a burst of beautiful color which lasts from late spring until late fall. This is a fast growing bush up to 5-6 feet tall and almost as wide. It is frost tender but has come back every year. In the spring, cut back the Mexican bird of paradise to about 2 feet tall.

This awesome plant can take full sun or shade so it's very versatile in your desert landscape.
If you want a spot of color in your desert landscape, try the Mexican bird of paradise.
