Easy License Renewals: Are They For You?

Easy License Renewals: Are They For You? by Bill Roberts

I renewed my California Real Estate Broker's License today. It was really easy. I did it completely on-line with the California Department of Real Estate (DRE).

We have a continuing education (CE) requirement here. I did that on-line as well. I used First Tuesday. It is the company of Fred Crane, a real estate attorney that I first met in 1975 when he was doing workshops on All Inclusive Trust Deeds (AITDs) for Stewart West Coast Title. Fred Crane is a very sharp guy. He sued BofA over due-on-sale clauses and won.

Later he started a real estate magazine which he called First Tuesday. His articles were always on the cutting edge of real estate practice change. they still are. A one year subscription (access) is included with continuing education course enrollment.

The CE courses he provides are also cutting edge. I highly recommend them.

The "final exams" for the CE courses are also done on-line. After you pass, you can print out your certificate of completion.

When I renewed my license today I merely entered the certificate number and the DRE printed out the course name and hours onto my renewal application. Talk about easy!

I paid on-line with a credit card and I was done for another four years. My license information.

Wow, Bill, that seems a bit TOO easy. My license comes up for renewal in February and since I'm a 'new' agent in Virginia, I had to complete 30 hours of CE. After February it will be 16. I take more than I technically need just to stay fresh. We've had some great speakers come to our association, so whether I need it or not I'll stay for the class.

Debbie, you can never have too much education. The Internet has made a lot of things easier.

Bill- I love how easy it is to renew my license. Since I am busy working and home with my kids, it is great to do it all online! Katerina

Katerina, Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks? To get back to my generation I would say I really dig it.

I used to work for a title company in Santa Clara County.  We had continuing education courses on videotape.  Every year around the holidays, the same agent would stop by for a couple of days, watch a few tapes, and earn credit.  I believe this also allowed her to write off some or all of her travel expenses, even though she also came to town to be with her family.  Online training is great, but if you're heading out of town for whatever reason, you might check to see if a local title company can help make it a business trip. ;)

Frank, that's a very good suggestion. I might have to give it a try. Thanks.
