We added an option for short sales to our free real estate database.  Real estate and mortgage professionals should be on the forefront explaining short sales to potential buyers.  As someone who has been/ and is/ on the front line in talking to these potential buyers on the phone about short sales, I can attest that it is a sure fire way to put a sparkle in a buyer's eye.
