Greener Sunny Days Ahead, Florida Power and Light, FPL embraces Solar Power!

FPL Group Inc. Florida Power and Light, our utility company plans to invest $2.4 Billion dollars in a clean- energy program by improving conservation and increasing Solar Energy production in Florida and maybe some other states. They will be building a 300- megawatt Solar Energy plant in Florida that will cost about $900 Million dollars.

Solar Energy Florida FPL The money will be allocated this way:

$1.5 Billion over 7 years for solar energy plants

$500 Million for technology that will help Florida customers cut down on energy use

$400 Million for customer purchases to be channeled to renewable- energy projects.

The solar plant will use technology from Ausra Inc a Palo Alto California company. The sun’s rays will be used to heat water to make a steam that spins power- generating turbines. The plant will produce 300 megawatts which will be able to power 45,000 homes and prevent the creation of about 11 million tons of carbon- dioxide emissions over 20 years.

FPL serves 4.5 million customers in 35 Florida counties. Solar Energy Florida Power Light

FPL already owns the world’s largest solar thermal fields in the Mojave desert and is the nation’s largest generation of wind power, with 53 wind plants in 16 states.

Florida’s governor Charlie Crist has been pushing for reducing carbon emissions by 10% by 2012, 25% by 2017 and 40% by 2025.  His state car runs on Ethanol and the Governors has installed solar panels. He said we must lead by example. Charlie Crist is a great example of not using this as a political platform. He is a Republican and says that he will stand by anyone who is for energy issues regardless of party affiliation. Now that is how it should be!

The more energy conservation projects are used, the more the price will go down. FLP’s goal is that when you go and turn on your light switch you will not be able to tell whether you have solar power or traditional power.

KATERINA:  Thank you for sharing this story.  We hear so much in the news about renewable energy, but it usually seems to be more of a concept then a reality.  Hopefully this is a trend that will only continue to grow.  Great information!  Thanks Katerina.

Thanks for letting us know about the news in Florida. Do you think this is not only good for customers and nature...but , in a  broader sense, good for all concerned?

Adam- Well, it is becoming a reality. Right now it is still very expensive but as more is learned and applied and used, the more the price will come down. It is a matter of responsible use of our energy. Katerina

Katerina, now you've given me a new asignment: to research the thermal energy from the Salton Sea area (your referrence to Mojave) where the Earth's crust is thinner than usual. I know Union Oil was developing this but I didn't know FPL had bought it.

Bill- I was so dumbfounded about how this all works at first, like why buy these places in other states, what good does that do here, and such. Researching for blog posts really opened my eyes to new understanding and seeing new ideas. My mother took me to the Salton Sea. She loved the Mojave dessert and was killed their when she was only 42 years old. I am paying a tribute to her this month. Her birthday is Oct 26. I remember when she took us to the sea and we started to walk in the water and I frieked out because the mud felt like squishy poop between my toes! I was like 12 years old so you can imagine what was going through my imagination at the time. We stayed in a motel there and remember it was SOOOO HOTTTTTT, my mother left the patio door open  then the crickets were so loud  I Could not sleep and then they came into the room! OH, not a good experience for a young girl! Katerina

Katerina,

Hopefully big projects like this will help reduce the cost of solar power.  I hope our children can look forward to a day when we no longer burn coal or produce nuclear waste to generate energy.

Yeah and FPL asks me every month for $9.95 to help them research alternative energy sources.  Like they don't profit enough already, they want me to kick in and help them out.  So, given they are receiving free money from their customers, I would say they aren't investing that much of their own money.  I'll pat them on the back when I see results.

Terry - Well said - we refer to them as Florida Plunder and Loot around here - I love alternative energy, but how much is PR and how much is actual - I personally think there is more PR than action - it is the 'in' thing to make you popular right now -

I wouldn't be surprised if FPL is one of the first national utilities to spur a consolidation spree in the solar sector.  I write more about this in this article:  <a href="http://energyspin.com/?p=46">"Solar Energy Consolidation Outlook"</a>

I comment regularly on the business/investor side of alternative energy on <a href="http://energyspin.com">Energy Spin: Alternative Energy Blog for Investors-Served Daily</a>

Cheers,

The biggest problem we have as a country is that we won't embrace nuclear power. The energy is cheap, produces ZERO carbon emissions, and is safe. Countries like France are miles ahead of us and while this is indeed a good story, the number of consumers it will serve is minimal compared to the number of consumers we have in Florida and that of course is a rising number.

Simon- I think that there is much more that we can be doing. We have not even scratched the surface of what we can do. I have seen some amazing technology that has been kept down because the powers that be might lose their control over their energy. I do not believe that Nuclear energy is safe. My mother knew alot about nuclear power and told me that there is hidden evidence of the cancer it causes. Did you know that Port St Lucie has the highest count of brain cancer in children?  I have seen the research by my own physician about the hazards of nuclear energy as we know it today. I am glad you commented, and just because I do not agree; you are always welcome and I enjoy you seeing you comment on my posts. Katerina

Katerina - wouldn't these blogs be boring real fast if we all simply said "I agree"? *lol* Of course there will be times when we agree and when we disagree and that is fine - there's a lot of two-way respect here and that is always the way I do business. And I would love you to come by my blog on a regular basis. Great thing on parking today!

So back to the nukes! Right now almost 80% of all French electricity is from Nuclear Power. To my knowledge (and I am more than happy to be corrected) there has been no increase in French cancer rates either internally or when compared to other modern countries. Their carbon emissions from power generation have been declining steadily since 1974 when they made the choice to go nuclear.

But we have other problems here too. Why have we not built an oil refinery in more than 30 years? The answer I'm afraid, is politics.

Simon- I will visit you today. Why don't we just get off of being addicted to oil? I will find the facts that I have collected when I get some more time to spend on that. Katerina
