If you live in Long Beach then you're familiar with the hundreds of flyers, postcards, and advertisements we receive at our doors every year. Thankfully now there's Litter-Free Long Beach to the rescue.

The program strives to keep the streets of our city litter-free to ensure a safe and clean community. The Litter Abatement and Awareness Campaign represents a citywide effort with residents and local businesses to create more vibrant business corridors, safer neighborhoods and a cleaner and healthier environment.

To participate in the program you can order a free door hanger or fence sign, or even better yet, download a "Stop Advertising" letter to mail to the offending business owner along with their advertisement.

When I first learned about this program I was thrilled. I like others are sick of the hundreds of menus, free gym memberships, and auto repair advertisements. I'm all for free enterprise, just not at my door.

I hope others take an opportunity to participate and stamp out junk advertising in Long Beach.

Hi LaShon--That's a good step, especially when the stuff ends up blowing around your driveway.  Now how about the ridiculous amount of advertisements we receive in our mail every day?  I know I shouldn't go there.  What a can of worms.  But isn't it disgusting that the bulk stuff constitutes such a major part of the stuff we get every day?  I don't even bother looking at it.  Straight to the recycling bin.

Sharon, the junk mail problem is out of control. Even though I've opted-out to receive credit card offers I still receive them on a regular basis so now I think I'm going to try a suggestion from Andy Rooney someone e-mailed me:

(3) Junk Mail Help:
When you get "ads" enclosed with your phone or utility bill, return these "ads" with your payment. Let the sending companies throw their own junk mail away.

When you get those "pre-approved" letters in the mail for everything from credit cards to 2nd mortgages and similar type junk, do not throw away the ret urn envelope.

Most of these come with postage-paid return envelopes, right?  It costs them more than the regular 37 cents postage "IF" and when they receive them back.

It costs them nothing if you throw them away! The postage was around 50 cents before the last increase and it is according to the weight. In that case, why not get rid of some of your other junk mail and put it in these cool little, postage-paid return envelopes.

That sounds like a great program!  On the mail the junk back to them I've been doing that for years.  And I FILL those envelopes as much as I can to add as much weight as I can fit in the envelope!  Most still keep sending me stuff, which amazes me.  I would think them paying $1 or so and getting a bunch of junk back - I place the junk with my name info where it can be prominently be seen - would make them rush to get my name removed.  Oh well!!

Ron, you're funny! You'd think they'd get the hint but I guess they take it as the cost of doing business.

Hi LaShon--I love your idea about the junk mail!  That is hilarious!  I will definitely have to pass that one on.  It didn't really occur to me before that it costs them money to receive the business reply mail back to them.  Thanks, LaShon and thanks Andy Rooney!

Sharon, I also thought Andy Rooney's idea was a hoot! I'm definitely going to try this one.
