How to Beat the Heat with some Read and Green!  It's National Watermelon Day!

WatermelonWith temperatures in the high 90's today in Delray Beach....and even in the 100's in our midwest anything you can do to beat the heat and keep you hydrated is a big plus!

Today is National Watermelon Day!  Settle down.. it's not an official government day so you still have to go to work.  But why not pick up something fun to help you through these hot days!

Just a few fun facts:

* Watermelon is 92% water!  No wonder it's a great thirst quencher!
* The first recorded harvest was 5000 years ago in Egypt!
* It is, by weight, the most consumed melon in the U.S.

When we were on our boat fishing or diving... watermelon was always in our cooler.  Big chunks of it sure beat eating bags of chips or cookies!

You can buy seedless watermelon... or if you are of a mind, buy it with seeds and have fun outside acting like a kid again.  We've found the smaller baby or bush watermelons to be just as good and great for when it's just the two of you!

And, don't forget ... watermelon while good alone, likes you to get a little creative with it! There's pickled
watermelon rinds, watermelon in salads, watermelon smoothies, grilled watermelon, injected watermelon (surelywatermelon cocktail you know of that!) and watermelon cocktails!

Two tips!  Look for the Field spot, which should be a creamy yellow.  This is where the watermelon rested on the soil.
Wash the melon (and other fruits) before cutting into them.  You don't want things on the skin to transfer to the meat of the fruit!

So get out there and quench your thirst with some red and green!

We used to have watermelon day at camp. We would grease one with vasoline and put it in the pool and then try to push it one end of the pool or the other.  Then we would cut them up and have watermelon fights.  Essentially smashing watermelon all over your opponent for 30 seconds!

John- I've never had pickled rind but I'd be game to try it!

Kym- That sounds like so much fun.. We'd sit outside and spit out the seeds... not so much at each other but at a target!

My husband has a system of cutting watermelon that makes it a rapidly-disappearing commodity at our house.  We'll be sure to celebrate this important day ;)  Thanks!

When I was a kid..............yes BARFF, I really was a kid once, a long, long time ago..............we had watermelon just about every night during the summer after dinner.  Love it, so refreshing.  Every Thursday when I go to see Mickey, I bring watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew, strawberries, kiwi, pineapple and grapes.

Nothing like watermelon in the summer. I think I have eaten more this year than in the past 10 years combined! And besides, it is healthy!

Kathy, Great Post! Watermelon is my favorite. We too take it on the boat. It's great on a hot day and wonderful way to stay hydrated. When on a boat trip to the lake, I usually cut it up for the kids but, there have been those quick trips to the lake when we just picked up a watermelon from the grocery store and broke it open and gave them spoons.

I remember as a kid having the best juiciest watermelon. We'd eat it on our front porch (at least 5-10 kids) and my grandmother would hose down the porch after (and sometimes the kids too).

Marco- now that's how to celebrate!  Anything to beat this heat.

Gary- We get it almost every week and love it when we're out on bike rides or just out!

Jill-I'd never heard of it either but I love eating watermelon when I'm thirsty.

Carla- Oh yes... I remember coming in the house and what a mess we all were.  But what fun that was!

How did I miss this one, Kathy. I love watermelon! Washing all fruit is important to remove any bacteria. Happy watermelon eating!

Richard- I used to cut the seeds out of the watermelon just to get my husband to eat it.  Not any more.. I go for the seedless type.

Toni- Hey... there are so many posts it's easy to miss one or many!  And, yes, you don't want to transfer germs and bacteria when you cut into the fruit.
