Solar Energy System Incentives Program.Does Your State Rebate? Florida Does!

In the 80's  my ex-husband and I were the first on the  block to get Solar Heating. It wasn't something that we set out to do but owning a home was costly to us. With our limited income, we had to find w ays to cut back.

Our sons were 3 and 5 when we purchased the system. People thought we were nuts and that was the worst way to blow close to $5,000.

As a matter of fact, our families weren't impressed.

I used to laugh....To some we were "HIPPIES!"

We just thought we were frugal.

It was not easy to afford, that's why we financed it!  The salesman promised our savings would be more than our monthly payment.

We were skeptical but we were sold! He made promises...Big promises!

  • Our savings would be more than the monthly payment
  • We would have a never ending supply of hot water, it made sense after-all we live in Florida.
  • Even if it rained, we would still have hot water.

All of the above were true. Our hot water seemed to be never ending and it did not matter if it rained or not!  As for the savings vs. the monthly payment.

He was right, we experienced savings on our electric immediately and yes the savings exceeded the monthly payment.

Then I read that Florida Power and Light, would rebate us for having Solar Heating! As I researched further, it was true however we did not qualify.

Why, you had to purchase a system that was authorized by them.

The company we purchased our system through was not included in the list.

If we would have done our research we would have gotten our system for almost nothing.

It was OK, what's done was done and we bought the system regardless of the rebates.

We would just have Florida Power and Light come out to the house and make sure we were energy efficient.

Something that FPL does for FREE!

Today, you can receive a rebate through the Florida's Solar Energy System Incentives Program. Does your state rebate?  Florida does.

Florida's Solar Energy System Incentives Program was established in June 2006 to provide financial incentives for the purchase and installation of solar energy systems from July 1, 2006, through Jun e 20, 2010.

The program, administered by the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), provides rebates to Florida residents, businesses, non-profits, and public facilities who purchase and install the following:

Applications for the rebate must be made within 90 days after purchase of the solar energy equipment.

Back then I had concerns of the environment, today these concerns still exists.

As the population continues to grow we must find a way to preserve some of our natural resources for our children and their children.  We have to find alternatives and utilize them.

Today FPL will still come out and test your home for Energy Efficiency.  Today it is still free!

Find out if your state rebates...When buying a home remember Florida rebates for Solar Energy systems!  For additional information contact Midori Miller today!

Midori, Great post and full of info.  FPL has a great site to where you can log in with your acct number and do a survey and at the end it will show you how you can save money. I cut my bill down by 20%.

Hi Matt-yes when dealing with buyer's I let them know.  Often times rather than pay for an energy efficiency rating...FPL will do it for free!  I know there is a difference in paying and FREE but I have actually had FPL come out and it saved us $$$$$$$$$$$.  I too took the survey and have cut my bill as well.  Thanks for commenting.

It's well worth it. We get 3-4months more pool time and have save money over the last 2 years we have had it.

Midori, every little bit we can do helps. Great post on using solar energy, it's harder to do in Michigan with the gray days.

Hi Midori-- Great post.  I don't know how FPL compares with our SDG&E, but our utilities are absolutely through-the-roof nuts.  SDG&E really overcharges.  Their corporate profits are directly correlated with how overpriced our electricity is.  Our local consumer watch group is always on TV talking about how badly the consumer fares with the electricity rates we pay.  I love the idea of going "off the grid".  Our neighbor did it and it saves them all kinds of money.

Good info, Midori. I looked into the Solar Heat rebate program. It does look good however the initial outlay is hefty to convert. Maybe when the market picks up! Wonder if the solar boosts resale price?

Tom-thank you...I personally think it is a great investment considering the long term savings.

Hi Sharon-our rates aren't so great either but I will say here they will come to your home and do an energy efficiency test!

Gary-I know what you are saying....I will say the savings are incredible.  I solar heating panels would increase value....just depends on how you look at it!  I think knowing that I had solar heating and a hot water heater....would increase the value to me, if I were a buyer.

FPL is great at letting us know what's available, but you put it into laymens terms which is so helpful. Thanks for helping us  save that buck!

The biggest problem we have as a country is that we won't embrace nuclear power. The energy is cheap, produces ZERO carbon emissions, and is safe. Countries like France are miles ahead of us and while this is indeed a good story, the number of consumers it will serve is minimal compared to the number of consumers we have in Florida and that of course is a rising number.

Right now almost 80% of all French electricity is from Nuclear Power. To my knowledge (and I am more than happy to be corrected) there has been no increase in French cancer rates either internally or when compared to other modern countries. Their carbon emissions from power generation have been declining steadily since 1974 when they made the choice to go nuclear.

But we have other problems here too. Why have we not built an oil refinery in more than 30 years? The answer I'm afraid, is politics as usual!

Simon-Thanks for commenting...Things are changing...so you never know...Presidential campaigns prove that!

Barbara-Jo and Bill-I actually mention how FPL does test your home for energy efficiency for Free...of course there is a difference in paid and free....most buyers that I have worked with opted for free.

Thanks Midori - as a new rez of FL - with the obligatory pool - your post has enlightened me.  Nice timing!

Quick note on the pool thing for our new rez! - the solar panels are great in the spring and summer, but you will have a cold pool in the autumn and winter if you don't supplement that with either an electric or gas heater.

Midori,  Thanks for this post. I am updating my website with an expanded section on alternative energy.  I wanted to add information on rebates and incentives. Your post is both timely and time saving for my research.
