portal into homeOne of my first acts as a new business owner was to join the Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce (GACC) http://www.abqchamber.com/.  I joined with no expectations beyond being learning and being part of a network of business people. Like so many others who join the chamber I, also was seeking knowledge.

Time and a frequent question from friends and acquaintances: encourage me to focus on what it means to be a member of the GACC. "What does the chamber (Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce) do for you? they ask. It is a question that reminds me of President John F. Kennedy's line: "Ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country," which to me is a call to action. At the chamber, a member can be very active.

The (GACC) is the largest business organization in the State of New Mexico. Its current membership of large and small business owners exceeds 5,000 and continues to grow. It is a dynamic organization that provides community leadership and a wide variety of training, educational, and promotional services for its members.

Chamber Membership Benefits
Membership in the GACC helps members:

  • Increase Sales Volume through opportunities provided by monthly networking roundtables, luncheons, after-hours events, referrals, provision of relocation packages and promotions for international trade.
  • Create Positive Company Image through ribbon cuttings, sponsorship opportunities, website directory listings, advertising opportunities, and mailing lists.
  • Influence Public Policy. Members have opportunities to serve on committees, participate in congressional luncheon series, lobby at the city and state level, participate in inter-city visits, and have access to community leaders.
  • Create Better Regional Business Climate by creating and participating in literacy programs, developing and directing youth leadership programs, corporate citizenship training, and diversity programs.Attract, Develop, and
  • Retain Employees through leadership development programs, conferences, training seminars, volunteer opportunities, and collaborative with the University of New Mexico (UNM) projects.
  • Save Money. Members save by taking advantage of TV/Cable advertising vouchers, business supplies vouchers, meeting space, member-to-member discount programs, complimentary notary service, and free technical advice.

People recognize chambers of commerce as portals into cities, and as entities having access to knowledge they can tap into. Before relocating or on first arriving in a city, they contact chambers of commerce for information. As a REALTOR®, I am interested in knowing that potential clients receive acccurate information. Being an active member of the GACC facilitates my being able to stay informed at all levels. What does my chamber do for me? As much as full participation allows.

Eloise, that is a huge Chamber of Commerce!!  I thought that ours was big, it isn't anywhere as large as your Chamber.  There are a lot of opportunities through the Chambers of Commerce if people take advantage of what they offer.

Hi Eloise.  I am a member of 2 Chambers.  One of them elected me as a board member and the other one nominated me for a board position.  I understand the importance of membership, but felt i needed to wait before being on the board..... I was asked IMMEDIATELY to help.  (I've been involved in neighborhood groups.... which they had knowledge of).

Like George commented, 5000 members is HUGE!!!  I don't think there are 100 in either Chamber that i'm in.  Like you, i'm looking forward to making a difference in whatever way i can.  Thanks for sharing.  There's much to learn, am grateful for you and this group!

Jennifer- You are right. The organization offers wonderful opportunities to meet people. We get to decide how much we want to participate.

George- The Greater Albuquerque Chamber, as the name suggests has members from beyond the borders of the city of Albuquerque. Several smaller chambers exist within the area. We all work very well together. The challenge is always to find the time to participate in as many events as we would like to.

Diane- Diane, many of us can quickly spot caring people with big hearts. I am not surprised you were asked to get more involved. I bet you are already doing a lot in your community, but I hope you will join get on board -:) one of these days.

Hello Eloise - I've been thinking of joining my local Chamber, and I really should get going on that.  It helps you become a local expert on the business side of things as well as residential.  Community involvement is important.

Hi Eloise

I few things you didn't mention in your article that I'm sure your Chamber does for you, and If they don't they should are; Pooled resources to market a community, we have found with enough dues and a meeting of the minds we could design a marketing champaign to bring out of state business our way. Collectively we could run bigger ads, radio spots and the like while anyone member didn't have the money to undertake these large budget items. The other item that is important and a big reason for membership is the web link businesses get from the chamber site. When a person/ Family wants to visit our area they have the option of booking rooms, buying tickets to area events and learning about businesses who are members.

Thanks for your blog I enjoyed it.

Steve

Steve- You are right. I did not mention everything that the Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce does. Indeed, I should revisit the topic because I may have given the wron impression. I hope you can my weblink on my Chamber's site. Also, with respect to campaigning to bring out of state business, my Chamber does a great job of networking and building alliance  with other cities nationwide as with other countries. Believe it or not, we just took 200 business people to China. Watch my blogs to learn more about that trip. It was a delightful trip and perhaps the best way to build mutual goodwill and friendship.

Thank you for visiting.
