globe of the worldReal Estate is Universal...traveling across cultural boundaries.

The need for a home lives within the heart of us all. The desire to create your own home, traditions, and memories is universal.

Several months ago while holding an Open House I had the pleasure of meeting a wonderful family. With smiles and shared enjoyment  we connected while I was giving them a tour of the home even though neither parent spoke English.  I primarily spoke with the adult children but shared smiles and hand signals with their parents.

I completed my follow-up and remained in touch with the family through the daughter. I did not pressure them because that is not my style, I but offered my services if they would like my assistance. After several email exchanges they called me to meet with them.

We began visitings homes, slowly but surely narrowing their focus. As we toured several homes I learned much about the family, their history and their desires. Slowly we began to build a bound. I could read the mothers excitement when we walked into a kitchen she enjoyed. I could see the fathers happiness when we found a yard large enough for him to have a garden. The "kids" (I tend to view anyone under 40 as a kid) began to relax and reveal their wants and their desires for the new home.

One day, as we walked around the home in careful English Mr. Buyer began to question me.  He asked "would you buy this?" It was then I knew we had reached a level of trust and it was a question I would hear from him every time we walked a home.

We found so many things in common. My daughter is the same age as their daughter, both who are attending school. The mother's appreciation for fine quality finishes struck an answering chord with me. Rather than focusing on our differences we focused on the common goal of finding their dream home.

Well today we opened escrow on their new home. We have more work to complete but this afternoon we joined each other for lunch and learned more about each other.

I love living in California, meeting people from all around the world and assisting them to find their dream home!

Kristal, I agree with Anna, it's a very positive, beautiful story. If you are in tune with your clients like you are language is not a barrier.

Kristal,

I love your story!  Building and receiving trust is the best accomplishment we can hope for.  Having a language barrier makes it all the more difficult.  I bet you also have wonderful body language and listening skills!  I hope your family enjoys their new home!]

Kristal,  It goes to show when we treat people with respect, ask relevant questions and just get to know them the whole process flows so much better.  Nice job in staying connected and "Hearing" their needs.

Kristal, what a great story! You really hit the nail on the head about housing being universal. And congratulations for recognizing an opportunity to help a family to achieve their dream, even if they didn't speak english, you were all speaking the same language!

Anna ~ Everyday we hear & see so much dissension in the world. It was nice to share a post about our common goals. Thanks for the feature!

Andrea ~I like your phrase "in tune with your clients." Love of home is universal like music.

Other Kristal ~ The non-verbal tools become so important when facing a language barrier along with listening.

John ~ The golden rule (or maybe the silver rule) treat people as  they wish to be treated.

Andrea ~ This has been such a eye opening experience for me.

I think we’re lucky here in California because people from all over the world want to own part of California.
