Last night my husband took our two dogs Major and Max for a walk, like he always does in the evening before he settles in for Jay Leno's commentary.  When he got back, Major was with him, but Max was no where around. If he sees a rabbit or other small critter he goes after him.  He is a stubborn, hard headed little black mutt with a mind of his own (but we love him).  We live in an older subdivision of 3 and 4 acres lots and so we are very much in the country, though we're only 5 minutes away from Kyle field and Texas A&M.

Well to get my point of this.  As we waited for Max, I noticed a light skunk smell (first one this year), and shortly after that, here is Max, at the door waiting to be let in.  Not in your life !!!  within minutes the whole area was reeking.  No sleeping with the windows open tonight.

Does anyone has a sure proof method of getting rid of this skunk spray odor????  The last time Max did this about 4 years ago (short memory) we tried tomato juice, and it did not work, maybe it was just and tough AGGIE skunk defending his territory.

Looking for some great solutions to my aromatic problem.

I had a skunk come into my living room once..... last time I left the sliding doors open.

There's a product called "skunk Off"

Here's a link

Maybe a pet store near you will have it.

:)  Not fun with the skunking...  I have one that gets them about twice a year!

Tomato juice mixed with baking soda is a sure thing.  Take a big bucket, and pour in a gallon or two (depending on dogs' size) (more is always better) and add a 2 cups of baking soda per gallon to the mixture.  This should turn into a gooey paste.  Wet the dog down with water, then paste him completely with this tomato/soda mixture, and make him keep it on for 5 to 10 minutes before rinsing him off.  Do this twice - then rinse thoroughly, and wash him a third time with some good-smelling doggy shampoo.  When you're doing the paste, don't forget his face, his feet, under his belly, and in between his toes, as skunk scent is everywhere, not necessarily just where he got hit.

GOOD LUCK :-)

Years ago, my first Dobie hated CATS because the neighbor's cat would loll around on our deck during the day to catch birds at my feeders. Rommel, who was trapped inside while I was at work, had to view this CAT on HIS deck.

We lived in a highly populated area and skunks were very common. Rommel thought they were cats. During the 8 yrs I lived there, Rommel got sprayed 5 times - always when I let him out in the fenced yard at night. You're right, tomato juice has only limited value. The pet stores sell an enzyme product but it doesn't work like you hope it will.

The skunk spray is oily (it permanently stained my house yellow), so I first used Dawn to cut the oil. Then I used the tomato juice. It helps a little, but it always took about 2 weeks for the smell to totally disappear.

BTW, the last time he got sprayed, he was able to KILL the skunk. He bit it - shook it - and if it moved - he shook it some more. He had to sleep in the garage that night and it was about 4 weeks for the awful odor to be gone.

Did you know that a skunk's spray can travel up to 15 ft! Good luck!

Victor - I think I will stop by my local PetSmart after my open house today.

Jonelle - Maybe my mistake the last time with the Tomato Juice, is that I didn't use baking Soda, that seems to come up alot in everything I have looked up.  Giving him a thorough bath is no problem, he loves water and attention.  Can't keep him out of the pool.

Elaine  -  Go get them Rommel,  Oops   maybe not.  wern't you scare about rabies in skunk he killed? besides that yuk !!  you got to clean it up.  Your a braver person than me.

This is going to sound really different, but use a Vinegar & Water Douche.. Ya I know... But it works wonderful. When we lived in Wisconsin, my Dogs would get it several times each year. Its cheap and very effective.

Jay, do you think my husband could pick some up on the way home.  NOT !!  Max is spending another night outside.  Just running out of sunlight to get the job done.

I called the vet to check on the rabies issue. His shots were all up to date, so the Dr didn't think there would be a problem since the skunk was just doing its nightly thing.

Rommel lived to be 10 and died of cancer in 1997. He was my soulmate.

The night he killed the skunk, my female rescue Dobie, Brandy, stood about 20 ft away and would look at Rommel and then look at me with a look on her face that said, "that thing REALLY stinks". She didn't want any part of it. It was funny.

Now that Jay mentioned the douche, I believe I've heard that as well. Although, I would think the baking soda treatment would be good at absorbing the odor as well as the oil.

Max's update.  Never made it to the store for the douche, so I tried a combination of baking soda, hydrogen peroxide 3%, and a little liquid dish soap.   Better, I didn't make him sleep outside, but he did have to sleep in the bathroom, away from all of us.  So today when I go to the store I am going to try and remember to get the douche and try Jays suggestion.

Jay, I'll let you know how it goes.

Elaine,   looks like you are a dobie lover, do you still do dobie rescue?

No, no longer have Dobies. When my third one died of cardio, I decided to move away from the breed, no matter how much I love them. They don't live long enough and when they get sick it was getting too hard on me to hoist a 100 lb dog. So I switched to The Murph, who is far more tenacious than the Dobes ever were. ;-)
