Odd LinkedIn requests. Have you been getting them, too?

By

I've been using LinkedIn since 2006, so I have a bunch of connections - 1,173 at this point.  Part of this is time on the networ, part of this is that I have met a lot of people in my life - college, business school, jobs, networking etc.

Most of the people I'm connected to I know (but there are a few I don't know and I accepted their invitations because I hate to be rude).

But, lately, I've gotten a few odd requests from people I don't know.  They look like this:

"I'm sure we have met somewhere because we have so many common connections. I'd like to add you to my professional network on LinkedIn"

"Hi Sohaib, you come up first in my "people you may know" section on LinkedIn, and your name is extremely familiar, but honestly I don't remember exactly where / how we met. I sometimes buy / sell on craigslist, maybe that was the reason? Anyway, lets connect on LinkedIn!"

gosh...at least get my name right!

Debbie, So far, not happening, but just a matter of time probably until the spammers show up there too.

Debbie: I too have recieved weird requests from Linkedin....I think it must be a by-product of social networking! I am very careful when "I accept" an invitation...you are opening up your information to all of those who you "accept" and I keep that in mind. It could just be that some people are looking to race for the acceptances so they can say "I have 500 links" or whatever. But the possibilities of giving out your personal business info to someone with less than good intentions, is not too smart

Deb: The really odd ones I just ignore. Personally I want my Linked In connections to be relevant. A friend, colleague, even a 2nd or 3rd degree connection if the invitation is personalized and makes sense for my business and my presence in the community,

Bernadine - Yes, this happens sometimes...but then sometimes I just wonder if I forgot them.

Lisa - Oh I would find that infuriating.  Maybe you can put a different phone # on there.  I have to see if mine is even listed, but I always list my office #. (I'm not in real estate).

Gwen - I agree.  It's pretty cool.

Bliz - Yes, so true.

Paula - Exactly...and they can see your email address on LinkedIn.  So, I've been more discriminating now that everyone is using it.  It was completely different back in 2006.

Ann - Yes, that is sthe smart way to do it.  I know almost all of my connections...I had a few from 2006 who are just recruiters and a few overseas from companies where I used to work.

Deborah Oh yeah, on FB, I really ignore people I don't know.

Debbie, I get a lot of requests on Linked In from people I don't know. I honestly can't keep up with all the social networking - and work, too - so I leave that only for people I know. But that is interesting that it sounds like you're getting spammed.  I've had that problem with WordPress lately - from posts that were months and months old (haven't used it myself in six months).

Good morning Debbie. I get many requests from people I don't know in many venues, I tend to ignore them because having my computer hacked isn't worth the possible connection to someone I may have a marginal connection to.

I get the occassional weird connection request but I decline any invitation unless I've actually met the person and know them.  I don't see the value in connecting with people in any social network if I haven't even exchanged an email.

Debbie - I'm seeing this more on Google + than I am on LinkedIn.  I find it a little unsettling that there are some really strange people adding me to their circles.  I'd much rather prefer to have to accept someone on there just like we do on Facebook and LinkedIn.

Hasn't happened to me yet but it's just a matter of time.  With over 1K contacts, you have quite the network built Debbie.

I only accept requests from people I know to avoid having an association with someone who just might be a spammer.

Cari - Yes, that is what it sounds like.  I don't like people using false pretenses.

Sheila - Good point.

Bryan - yes, I think I'm going to have to follow a strategy like that.

Donna - OMG, you are so right.  I forgot abt that since I'm barely using.  I've only connected w/ those I know - most are from AR.

Anita - Yes, it will happen.  I've been using LI for a while and you have to remember that I've lived in several areas of the country and met a lot of people along the way in my schools and jobs.  And, now w/ this business, I do a lot of networking.

Craig Yes, this is the smart way to go.

Hi Debbie,

I haven't gotten any as of yet. I don't know if anyone else has gotten them or not. I don't check LINKEDIN very much but I know I should.

Have a great night!

Deb - I've gotten those requests too where they don't even know your name - lol. I should pay more attention to my LINKEDIN account, but with everything else I haven't paid too much attention to it lately. Maybe I should but there's only so many hours in a day!

HI Debbie,

LinkedIn is a bit wierd in any event, it supposes that you can only have met people in certain circumstances, and they can't possible a collegue unless you have worked at the same company.......

but you are right I do get a few of the ones you have indicated, and most I ignore, some I will dig into a little,
