In writing posts that feature songs, and stories about songs, that were big hits in the past, it is readily apparent to me that many of the hits were propelled to the top of the charts due to their prominence in movies that had huge followings.
The song that was #1 on the singles chart in November 1987 fits in that category. This duet was by a man and a woman. The man is one of the most successful male performers of the entire rock era, part a famous duet that was right up there with Simon and Garfunkel. He had been involved in many hits and two of them had been #1 songs. It had been 22 years since this performer had charted with a #1 song. We will call him Bill and he was not any too excited about it when management talked to him about recording a soundtrack cut. The last time he had taken a flyer on a movie soundtrack, record sales had flopped. The female vocalist was lesser known but, previously, she had a single #1 hit -- a duet with Joe Cocker.
Neither party needed to worry about this one flopping, because the song was integrally woven into the soundtrack of one of the sexiest and most popular movies of the last half-century.
To see the original artists perform this #1 hit from 1987, simply change channels by pushing the play icon on the TV below. Go for the song, heck, you can catch up with Baywatch and the sharp, crisp dialog some other day.
