Good neighbors are priceless. I’ve lived in enough places to appreciate having good neighbors. Living in a home with neighbors who rub you the wrong way can make every day life stressful and unpleasant. What makes for a good neighbor is as diverse as the people who are our neighbors. As a home inspector I generally don’t get to meet the neighbors, but I often notice things about their homes while inspecting.
This is especially true while up on the roof. A bird’s eye view affords a great vantage point in which to see the surrounding neighborhood. Sometimes I see the quirky, like a camper permanently parked in the yard complete with a little white fence. Perhaps this the in-laws guest house when they come to visit.
Other times I spy a cool architectural detail, like this three flue chimney and slate roof. This house I found out later was for sale. Who knows I may get the inspection, but I definitely won’t be climbing on that roof.
Once in a while the neighbors land just adds to an already beautiful view. When it’s gloriously sunny morning, up high with a fantastic panoramic view, I’m often reluctant to come down off the roof.
Like I said earlier, I don’t have the opportunity to meet the neighbors while doing an inspection, but I do get to see some of their interesting stuff.
