The excitement of the season is mounting! No, it's not golf, but that is definitely in the running; it's meteors! I've been known to set my clock and awaken at unseemly hours to observe meteor showers. This week, however, starting Tuesday AM at dawn, the Perseid meteor shower should be visible in spite of the waxing moon. From what I have read, the best viewing times are the 9th, 10th, and 11th, since the Perseids' peak will occur around the 13th, when the moon is full.
I love basic astronomy, meteor showers and the Perseids are no exception. The Perseids are typically fast and bright, with good tails and an occasional amazing fireball. So, get out of bed early the next several mornings and catch a celestial show rivaled by few.
Oh, by the way...I'm lucky enough to live in an area of Steamboat Springs with little ambient light. The summer sky is always in my sights!
