Day #18: 30 Day Challenge, Music-Style...Highway To Hell

We're rockin' out today...after recent songs from Jimmy Buffett, Dionne Warwick (and yes, a classic Rush song in Limelight), I turn the amp up to 10 today and send the music of AC/DC throughout the neighborhood.  Today's Day #18: 30 Day Challenge, Music-Style... missive has us at the letter N, and is a tribute to AC/DC's Highway to Hell (words and music Angus Young, Malcom Young and the late Bon Scott).

In a way, the words of this 30-year-old song ring true today- offering a description of today's U.S. government that the band could hardly have envisioned...

"No stop signs, speed limit
Nobody's gonna slow me down

Living easy, living free
Season ticket on a one-way ride
Asking nothing, leave me be
Taking everything in my stride
Don't need reason, don't need rhyme
Ain't nothing I would rather do
Going down, party time
My friends are gonna be there too

I'm on the highway to hell"

I bounced back and forth between this and You Shook Me All Night Long when making my AC/DC choice- go with this one that's the last hit lead singer Bon Scott belted out or go with You Shook Me that's the first hit current front-man Brian Johnson led on?  Either way, I couldn't miss.

Please forgive me, fellow AC/DC fans- for my having placed the lyric portions out of order a bit- but I had to do it for my theme and all!

The more important lesson to be spoken of today, though, is that we need to keep the pressure on our governments- local, state and federal.  We need to remind those we've elected to represent us that there is no living free- and we don't need to go where the season ticket on a one-way ride could be taking us.

That's kinda funny.  I don't think I would have made the connection to today's US Govt. from this song.  :)

Hi, Jeremy:  Thank you for stopping by, and for your comment.  Yep- that's the thing:  many in D.C. (and elsewhere, for that matter) must honestly think that we can live free.  One-way ride, though...unless we change our ways, it's a one-way ride.

And that actually applies to things other than finances, but I digress...

True.  I think many politicians think we need to be controlled for our own good.  And unfortunatley, their efforts have produced a society that now has a large number of those folks in it:  they NEED the government to take care of them.

I'm certain that's now how it was intended to be.  We all need help, but that's what family, friends, and neighbors are for!

Hi, Jeremy:  Thank you for stopping by, and for your comment.  I've always said that I hate to throw people into bins..."good people", "bad people", etc- but those folks do exist.  Charles Manson?  Bad guy.  Jerry Lewis?  Good guy no matter what the flippin' MDA board says.

Nationally and politically, though- we have "assets" and "liabilities".  Throw out any race discussions with it- as all races have "assets" (or "good people"), all have "liabilities" (or "bad people").

The problem lies in when the timee comes (and we may very well be there now) that the "bad" outweigh the "good", we're in a world of hurt...a world of hurt.

If you have no job and you're getting paid not to have a job- and one guy is going to make sure that keeps happening while another says "The jig's up!  Game over!  Start workin' and earnin' your keep"....who are the "bad" folks going to vote for?

Yes, that last part is the part that I see as the problem.  It will all quit only when the folks that fund the taxes rebel in some form or another.  Whether by force or by not paying taxes.

The base of the problem is that we have more govt. jobs in this country than private jobs.  That means that less than half the country is paying for more than half the country.  And that mean that more than half the country is not actually paying for anything, but taking the money from the private sector and giving some of it back.

And that's why we're in a crisis overall.  When there is more government employees than taxpayers (and I mean ACTUAL taxpayers, not govt. employees giving money back to the the govt.), things willl head towards collapse fast.

Hi, Jeremy:  Agreed.  None other than The Bible says, in 2 Thessalonians 3:10 "If anyone is not willing to work, neither should he eat".  Now, that's from the New International Version- and it seems pretty clear what the rules should be.  But maybe there are a ton of others who, like me, choose to hold true to the King James version- which is a bit tougher to read in places.  Perhaps many are confused by a whole bunch of crazy "Thou"s or wacky "Thy"s.

Oops...."If any would not work, neither should he eat"....King James Version.  Seems clear to me there, too- God said we need to work.

It boggles the mind how someone who hasn't "hit a lick at a snake"- to borrow a phrase from my granddaddy- nor earned a penny for a year- can then end the year with a $5,300 "refund" check.  Here's a reality check- although I'm pretty sure everyone already knows it:  You're not getting a "refund"- you're stealing from someone else's family, you thief.  Do you think that money you get back without paying in just falls out of the sky?

But once again, I'm not hatin' the player- I'm hatin' the game they're getting to play with other folks' money.

Dennis, that's a good motto, especially since it's from God!  If one is physically unable to work, then we should show compassion and certainly give assistance.  But there seem to be a lot that are able, that may not be working.

And of course, in this economy, there aren't jobs for many of those that would like to work!  So not only do we have those that don't work on the govt. payroll, but now those that can't get work as well.

We're certainly not in good shape overall, but praise God it's not as bad as it could be.

Hi, Jeremy:  Amen to that one, Amen to that.  In a startling turn of events, I've actually agreed with our president and his similar sentiment over the past few days.  No matter how things look here right now, where else would you like to be?

Exactly.  I don't think I'd rather be anywhere else.  I just hope and pray we get our house in order soon.

Hi, Jeremy:  No doubt about it.  You can look at it as  a really big family circle.  There are brothers and sisters that walk the straight and narrow, an aunt or cousin that may stray from it, and an uncle that's just plain crazy- but the goal of all should be that the circle be unbroken.

We just have to have the courage to tell Aunt Edna, Cousin Elroy and Uncle Billy that moochin' time is over.

The only problem is that Aunt Edna, Cousin Elroy, and Uncle Billy are all elected officials in charge of making decisions.  I think the public tried to tell each party that we're tired of all their spending in the last two elections:  look at how bad the Republicans lost in '08, and then look at how bad the Democrats lost in '10.

I'm not sure either really got (or gets!) the message.

Hi, Jeremy:  Thank you for commenting again.  As I mentioned in a comment on The Landlord Whisperer's blog yesterday, we (being Republicans) need to sort out the "won't be the nominee" folks ASAP.  Thanks to Pawlenty for bailing- now we need to jettison Newt, Ron Paul and Herman Cain (sad as that may be).

Forget Chris Christie- he's not in the race.  Forget (again, sadly) concentrating on Huckabee- not in the race.  My concern right now is the Sarah Palin factor.  If she's not running (and I don't think she is), she needs to step back a bit and quit being the gnat she's making herself out to be.

Reminds me of how Pete Rose goes to Cooperstown every year and signs autographs all day across the street from the Hall of Fame during induction weekend.  He's never getting in- so he's a gnat.

Although I do have the gnat's autograph...he is amazing at signing...Pete Rose- 4 letters, 4 letters.  He can literally sign 600 balls an hour- he's done it.  6 seconds or so to sign your name...and collect $75.
