Conimicut Point, Warwick, Rhode Island

Did you know that Conimicut Point used to have a Casino?

Or that the Lighthouse was being rowed to by Lighthouse keepers from across the bay at Nyatt Point?

Or that people used to take a trolley car from Providence, pass through Conimicut, (or stay there), and then travel on to Rocky Point Park?

Or that it was the site of an important Indian meeting?

There's probably lots that you do not know about Conimicut Point. If you would like to read some interesting history about it, read Don D'Amatos "Conimicut, A Modern Village" on the city's web site.

For me, Conimicut has always been the place I would go when I thought I had problems. I would go there and sit and watch the waves and peer at the Conimicut Lighthouse. I have painted that lighthouse and I know every nook and cranny. Something about being there puts all your problems in perspective.

Conimicut is a very cute Bay front community. Back in the '38 hurricane, parts of Conimicut were obliberated. Now, if you drive around you will see many homes "on stilts", or the new hurricane modifications that have been made to protect the homes. The area still retains it's feeling of history. Below is a slideshow of some photos, taken at the waters edge.

Karen, I lived in RI a long time and I don't think I every heard of "Conimicut Point". Where is it located???

Conimicut Point is in Warwick, off West Shore Road, on the way to Rocky Point. It's also called Shaomet/Shawmet on most maps, named after the Indians that lived there originally.

Karen, I also didn't know where it was until you mentioned the other name. For a small state I think Rhode Island is absolutely beautiful and miss going there!

I agree, Rhode Island is a beautiful state. It makes it easy to write these little signets! Guess most people know of Rocky Point. Conimicut has improved quite a bit in the last ten years or so.

Karen: I knew where the point was, but did not realize that this is where the old casino hadbeen... this point came up in conversation the other day, and I was blank on it completely... I was, like, Casino? Warwick? What?

hmmm, I suppose it was my time to learn something... Conimicut Point is a beautiful place. As with much of RI, there are some fabulous locations hidden away from the rest of the world, yet within easy access to it... you can hide in beauty or ride the urban tide, either way as you like it...

Paul, You have such a way with words. Funny, that today, my husband and I were discussing what it was we loved so much about the ocean and boats. Guess I could use your quote exactly for an answer.

As a Warwick resident I love hearing about the history of the villages that are just around the corner from my home! I grew up in South County with it's many unique villages, and have gotten to know more about Warwick over the last 4 years. It has alot more to offer than I had expected prior to my move.

South County is wonderful! My parents sold a home in Green Hill just last year and I love it there! But Warwick has it's own charm and history (especially if your interested in Indians) Rhode Island has a lot of Indian history.

Karen- nice slide show! I enjoy Cape Cod, but there is something special about Rhode Island - that's where I head when I want a break and need some beach time. One of my children has been asking me to take her to the beach when it's snowing and blowing for some photos - do you think this would be a nice area to go to?

Hi Jackie, Thankyou! Should I mention this came over at midnite? lol!!! For Snowy photos, right now anyway, there is none, but when it does eventually snow, Conimicut is very scenic with the lighthouse. (also, I have found Scituate Mass to be absolutely gorgeous in the winter) Funny, you head to RI and I head to the Cape!!! Thanks for stopping by.

Karen- LOL! Maybe we should have a special signal for when we pass each other heading in opposite directions? I realize there is no snow right now, but we're hopeful this year will be just a little better than last - just a little though! Oh my, I love, love, love Scituate and hadn't considered going there in the winter - thank you for the suggestion and I will definitely be checking out Conimicut this winter.

My daughter is going to be thrilled when it finally does snow and I surprise her with a trip to these lovely areas. Thank you!

I grew up on the water in Conimicut. It was like living in Mayberry. The A&P had sawdust on the floor and a coffee grinder at the register. The meat section had a big window to watch the butcher at work. Even the Post Office was classic with its bustle and personal service. Conimicut Elementary had a charm right from Normal Rockwell. The barber shop, the Rexalls and the bakery filling the air with its aromors of everything fresh.

Winters were sometimes harsh but picturesque. Sliding down Bluff Ave. or off any bank along the coast. The whole neighborhood came alive with activity not only digging out but treking to the stores for needs using sleds. Snowball fights were rampant. I may have even started a few. All the young kids were out trying to make money shoveling walks and driveways. We always had to shovel out our own first.

Summers brought baseball on the lots and swimming in the bay. Grace Ave. was great for jumping off the wall when it was moon tide. Conimicut Point was a great meeting spot for friends to just hang out and be themselves. We'd see people we hadn't seen since school let out. Again, in the summers you can bet the kids were out to mow lawns to make some money to buy some ice cream from Scotty the ice cream man. We even used to make lemonade stands and perch at the side street corners.....I'm running out of space. I think you get my drift. I'll always look back with pride and happiness. I'll always remember.

Brian, What a lovely tribute to Conimicut Point! And who doesn't remember Scotty the Ice cream man? I am afraid only the Post Office is left of the original Conimicut, but I suspect the activities are still the same. Thankyou for stopping by and enhancing my post:)
