As many people know, the City of Burbank has long provided its residents and businesses with power from our own private power facility. What many people do not know is that the city has also been committed to progressing into renewable energy(Green energy) for them as well.
Over the course of the past 6 years the city has built several new facilities to help to achieve their goals. these are to include:
- A new power plant which uses about 25% less fuel than our older power plant while producing 95% less nitrogen oxide emissions(a key ingredient in smog).
- Landfill Generators which draw power from a renewable energy source located at the city landfill. Burbank hit the books with this as the WORLDS FIRST commercial Capstone micro-turbine installation running on landfill gas. This is producing enough power for 500 homes.
- A Water Reclamation Treatment System which reduces the use of the city's potable water use by up to 70,000 gallons a day.
- 2 New Hydro Generators which produce enough power for 200 homes a day.
- Solar Water Heating for the public pools in the city.
The city is always researching new ways to provide its residents and business with clean and efficient power sources.
There is now a program which many residents may not be aware of called the "Green Energy Champion" program which residents may enroll in to receive green power from the city based on a percentage of use that they would like to recieve. There are 3 levels of participation (Bronze 15%, Silver 37.5% and Gold 60%). The additional cost to each resident for normal use is under $6 a month. You can call the Burbank Department of Water and Power directly at 818-238-3700 or enroll on-line at the BWP website.
