Closing down and preparing an estate for sale in Connecticut. Trees require maintenance too.

Where would we be without TREES?....
Trees have provided peaceful places where great minds could think the deep thoughts that changed the world. I daresay that if Sir Issac Newton had not had a quiet fruit tree to contemplate Fairfield County CT. Charter Oakunder, he may not have discovered gravity, leaving us seemingly cemented to the earth for no apparent reason at all. Trees have been used as meeting places for young courting lovers. It is entirely possible that you may not even have been born if your grandmother sat under the apple tree with anyone else but your grandfather.

Most of us take the trees all around us pretty much for granted. They seem to operate on their own, without much input or effort from us at all. Year in and year out there they are, providing cooling shade in the summer and splashes of spectacular color in the fall. But, the truth of the matter is....There is no free lunch. Even these quiet giants need attending to every now and then.

Fairfield County Connecticut
has many beautiful towns, all copiously covered with numerous varieties of trees. Most properties have hundreds of them. They can add significant value both monetary and aesthetic, especially if they are properly cared for. A good arborist, who focuses on the health and safety of individual trees, is worth their fee. Ask around to see who the neighbors use or, check the local nursery.

I was startled into this topic today by the fallen branch I found in my yard this morning. The branch, while not enormous, was large enough to do some serious damage to, or even kill a person. The fact that it fell squarely in theFallen Branch in Fairfield County, CT. middle of my back patio where my friends and family socialize, eat and play is frightening. Any of the six or seven people who have read my blogs know from my signature photo, that is where I sit feet up and fireside. Had I been out there last night....who knows what could have happened?

I regularly scan the tree canopy to seek out these woody bombs. In this case it was not visible from my terrestrial vantage point. In the ten years I have lived here, I have had dead branches removed and questionable ones thinned out, at least twice.  I guess it is once again time to call the tree guys.

When an executor or trustee calls
on us to help with an estate close out, estate clear out, estate clean up and estate property fix up's, we provide them with a detailed assessment of what needs to be done. Often, we find that the trees on the estate property have been neglected for a long time. We will get the right people to correct any problems, and add value and curb appeal to the estate property tree line.

OK, so I'm the second one to read your blog...we're long overdue for this maintenance.  We are surrounded by, and infested with, large, old oak trees.  We are eyeing some branches that hang over powerlines - they need to go.

I've been known to recommend limbing when it's called for as part of a Staging Consultation.

Ginny, I have used Connecticut Arborists in the past. The owner has a degree in arboriculture which sets him apart from some of the other tree services. I do agree trees are and important but frequently overlooked area.

Julia, I am glad to hear that as a stager you do indeed take the trees into account. You should ask the local nursery that you use, what tree people thhey like.

Out here we have to be careful of the eucalyptus trees. They are very tall, very brittle, and have shallow root systems, so a good, strong Santa Ana wind can topple them or split them apart.

Jim, Here we just have ancient oaks and pines, ready to toss a frail limb or two at you.

Peter - Great post - glad you were not out there at your fire that night!     We had a white pine top fall three years ago directly across our driveway, and miss the house by about two feet.   It was a huge 35 foot tall top off of a 75 foot tree....

Dagny, in all this treed in beauty we sometimes forget that there can be a dangerous side to the shade. Every time the wind blows I fear one of the huge oaks will come down on my house.

That size branch is common here, and it's always a eucalyptus tree. They are tall and brittle, and they like to shed their own big branches all the time.

Jim, What really got to me was where it fell relative to where my kids and my family spend most of our time out there. It was not a huge branch but the trees there have no branches at all below 30 feet. The one that fell was well above that and concealed from view. It could have hurt someone (especially one of my kids) and that is a scary thought.
