Craigdarroch Castle, Victoria BCCraigdarroch Castle Historic House Museum, Victoria BC

Completed in 1890,  the Castle was completed just after its owner Baron, Robert Dunsmuir passed away.

His Wife Joan Dunsmuir live in the "home" until her death in 1908, and since then Craigdarroch Castle was used for:

  • Military hospital
  • A college
  • School board office
  • A conservatory of music
  • Now as Craigdarroch Castle Historic House Museum

The stories, the restoration project and  its checkered history make Craigdarroch Castle a must visit stop for anyone visiting or living in Greater Victoria.
The Home, grounds, and setting is truly very special, and one can truly appreciate what this home and it grounds would have looked like during the days of the Dunsmuir's.

Upon his Death, Robert Dunsmuir Estate was estimated to be between 15 - 20 million (1890 dollars), one can only imagine the wealth and  furnishings, the design, its setting and the amazing interior of this "Bonanza Castle"

Peter and Linda - The Craigdarroch Castle looks like a wonderful place to visit.  I was in Victoria, B.C. back in 1994, and have always wanted to go back!  I remember The Empress Hotel as well.

Hi Bob,

Thanks for your kind feedback, and comments, we love these old properties and their personality, compare to today's designs, we would think they are all wrong, but they just have very little compromise for quality and space use.

Linda that is beautiful!  I would LOVE to visit that place!  Castles are so cool!  Great job adding elements like this to your real estate blog.  Consumers like to see things other than the typical buy and sell lingo!

As many times as I’ve been to Vancouver and Seattle, I’ve never made it across the channel to the Island. It will happen someday.

HI Chris,

You got that right, just walking around these buildings is special, there is just not enough money, patience or determination to do this anymore, and for those that do, they will never let us into their properties.....
