If you are not sure where that is it is about 40 minutes southeast of San Francisco right before the Altamont Pass into the San Joaquin Valley. Livermore is named after Robert Livermore a rancher who married a Spanish landowners daughter and brought civilization to the area. Robert Livermore is buried not far from here at the Mission San Jose church. We have lots of history in this town but what I would like to talk with you about is the family friendly community that we are a part of. We are a rodeo town. Known for ranching, vineyards and rodeo for entertainment. We host the World's Fastest Rodeo the first week-end of June. If you have not seen this you are missing a great piece of Americana. Our Livermore Downtown Association has helped transform our outdated downtown area to a bright and lively community mecca with something for everybody. Our revitalized downtown is shining with restaurants, Coffee shops , boutiques, a 10 screen movie theatre, a newly opened Performing Arts Theatre, a centralized community square and fountain and much more to come. We host over 30 boutique wineries, most on the southside of town and have a conservancy to protect our beautiful open space with vineyards for years to come.
Weekly, we have a farmer's market, downtown musical entertainment and monthly wine tasting at the farmers market. We have a family night, as well , with lots of activities for the kids. Our Parks and Recreation Department is exceptional, offering many classes for all age groups. We opened a new community center a few years ago that is fabulous as an event venue, meeting rooms, senior center, swim center complete with water slides and kiddee play areas.
The schools hold their own with a diverse population. The school district is working very hard to keep us in line fiscally while providing top notch educational programs and increasing our scores from our students. We have a good selection of public and private schools in our city and many extracurricular programs for sports and academics.
We have a well rounded community that provides very well for our families with entertainment pleasure, artistic interests, educational substance, great food and wine, and most important we have a sense of community that instills a small town atmosphere with all the frills of a larger metropolitan area but offers us much more to our families than ever expected. Touche' city planners and committed community members. We have a great thing going here in Livermore!
