So Far to Go, So Much to Learn........ (Realty Blogging Review #3)

Realty Blogging

This has been one of the BEST books for my business that I have picked up in a good long time!  I joined Active Rain a few months ago, having no real idea what the heck this thing called "blogging" was, and boy, have I learned ALOT since then!!

I have only finished Chapter 2 in this book, but that chapter alone is a whole book unto itself.  I canNOT wait to see what the rest of the book is going to teach me!

Chapter 2 of "Realty Blogging" breaks down all those words and phrases I've heard into plain understandable English - something that actually makes sense to me.  All the posts I've read here on AR I just had a smattering of understanding, but now I can read them and actually know (sort of!) just what they're talking about.  I just know this particular chapter is one that I will go back to many times, no doubt.

One thing mentioned in this chapter is the very small percentage of people who actually click on those paid/sponsored links that people pay good money for in the searches.  It's less than 20%.  Did you know that?  I certainly didn't!  The overwhelming majority of people only click on the links that come up naturally in the organic searches.  That was interesting information I thought, and good news for those who don't pay for those sponsored ads.

Blogs are much more appealing to search engines than most websites because the content on blogs changes all the time, or it should if you want your blog to work for you.  Most websites change very infrequently, becoming stagnant on the search engines, whereas blogs get updated with fresh and relevant content much more regularly.  I liked reading that information!  And that gave me a new game plan with regards to each of my blogs and websites.  Now I just need to put that plan into action... ;-)

Just in this chapter alone, I learned all kinds of tips for future posts on my blogs, and I also learned some things not to do.  Now I'm wondering if I should go back and tweak my past posts, or leave them and just go Yellow Highlighterforward with my new knowledge.....hmm, still thinking about that one.  Several tools were listed in this chapter to help with keywords and tagging.  The only "tagging" I'd ever heard of before Active Rain was like tagging someone in flag football or tagging something with your name so people know it's yours.

"Relevancy", "backlinks", "google juice", "blogrolls", "trackbacking", "permalinks", "pinging".....this is just a sample of the things that are so wonderfully explained in this chapter.  I now have something in plain English that makes perfect sense to me, and I can continually refer back to it to help me just get better and better in this new world of "BLOGGING".  My highlighter got a severe workout in this chapter, that's for sure!  I probably need to go buy some new ones now to make it through the rest of the book!!

So, before this gets too long, I just want to say thanks to Mariana Wagner, Carole Cohen, Monika McGillicuddy, TLW, Ines, Karen Hurst, and the other fine Good Ladies for the prompting to read this book.......

Now, on to Chapter 3 and beyond............I'm so looking forward to learning even more so I can put this to use in my business!!

Ann, Thanks for the review.  I will put this on my Christmas list.  Sounds like a must read.

"The Lovely Ann"

From all The Good Ladies Of The Rain we thank you for taking time out to assist us in these reviews. :)

This is very nice of you. I understand everyone is very busy. So, I can't tell you how much this means to us all.

I found this Chapter to be "insightful" geek speak is not something I do very well. I am much better at RainSpeak. lol.

Reading this was much like a "Hey, I Get It". :)

I have thought about tweaking a few posts as well. However, I know I am already driving a few people crazy with the emails.

I am still pondering that. Especially the tags. I have a much better understanding of tags now.

There are a few things I will not be changing. Why? I like to be out of the box when it comes to the way I do things. But hey, that's just me. :)

Thank you so much for blogging about a book.  I hope you get alot of bloggers that comment on your book that read it.  I would love to hear their opinions or maybe what blogging book is their favorite. I bought a book, blog wild-I haven't gotten anywhere with it.

I'm reading "Realty Blogging" now too Ann.

Super book; I'm on Chapter 3 and finding it hard to put down.

I'm reading it sitting at my computer desk and looking up a lot of the websites and blogs it references which slows down my page turning somewhat but I find it enhances the book quite a bit.

Ann - great review of Chapter 2.  Here are several things that caught my eye on this chapter:

pg 26 - explains why Active Rain has been excellent for Search Engine Optimization - "The secret associated with multiblogger community sites for purposes of SEO is that blog communities create stronger search engine optimization leverage because each new post creates links that point to your main community site, to other community members, and to your regular business Web site as well, if you have one."

I do have 1 question on a topic that is not yet clear on my mind, and maybe can ecourage discussion:  Page 23 talks about talkback.  The book explains that a blogger can copy a trackback URL and past in a special field on the user interface and when the post is published, the other blogger's site is pinged and an excerp of what was said appears in the other blogger's post.     I was totally lost there - maybe it was late when I read it  - any clue what this is?

Ann good morning! Thank yo so much for the chapter review! I agree about understanding things much better now. I still need some work on tagging; not the concept anymore, but how to do it more consistently without overdoing too many words in the same post that are alike. For example, from Realty Blogging and Mary McKnight I figured out that if I use Cleveland as a tage I have to be aware to not repeat the name over and over again. At least I think that is what it tells me!That there needs to be a balance.

I agree COMPLETELY with Jim Lee. There is alot of interactive learning that can happen from this book.

I will be back later for more and thank you again!  : 0 )

Ann - I think it would help to include (Realty Blogging review #3) in your title like Carole and Mariana did.

I believe this must be a good book.  You are about the third person I've heard mention it.  Thanks for the post.

Awesome review Ann. I read that same chapter last night..finally.

I just decided to shut down the puter and started reading the book!   Like Ines... I was lost on the talkback section as well... Can anyone help clear that up? I asked Jay but he was clueless as well. I was surprised by a lot of stuff in that chapter and need to re-read it. It is by far a True Eye Opener for me and I didn't even know I was in the dark. I could just kiss those guys (the writers) LOL...

I agree you should add Realty Blogging review # 3 to the title...Awesome Job.

I will give the official Realty Blogging Answer since Paul and Richard both work with me. (Maybe I'll get side credit as a ghost-author of meaningless mention, haha)

On many blogging platforms there are several options to read comments, add a comment, or add a trackback. (ActiveRain does not support trackbacks currently)

A trackback is just like leaving a comment, but it is a comment left on your blog instead of the one with the original article. If ActiveRain had a trackback function, I could have taken this answer and posted it as a trackback.

When a reader comes across an article, they see comments and trackbacks. Most trackback systems give you one or two lines of the response and then hyperlink back to the trackback authors site.

The reason for this is really two fold.

1- When I answer or comment on something and put a lot of thought into it, I want to be able to take that quality information and post it on my own site. This lets me benefit from engaging the conversation on the original site, but it also lets my own personal viewers benefit as well.

2- By hosting the "complete comment" on my own personal blog, I keep complete control over it. Someone else can't go in and edit what I said (which has happened on some blogs) and my site also benefits from having original content indexed by the search engines.

I hope that helps answer for you. If not, let me know. :)

Barry - you are awesome - that MORE than explains it - thanks for taking the time to enlighten us and have Paul and Richard give you that "ghost-author of meaningless mention" you so deserve.

First, Ann- Great review! I agree with TLW, here - the "GeekSpeak" gets deciphered and translated into terms that I understand. That is the beauty of this book.

Second, Ines- I had the same problem. I was going to go back and reread it a few times ... but now ...

Barry - THANK YOU! That makes PERFECT sense. Thank you for taking the time to lay that out for us!

Thanks

I am so grateful that Barry and Paul have been willing to help us as we go along!  I'm going to read chapter seven again tonight. At least I have had it n my head to do that for three days so I think thats the right one!

So a trackback is sort of like an embedded link? I agree with the others on this Monika, I bet we keep going back to the book and reading chapters or issue points for years to come.

Or at least until technology changes (as it always does) and we wind up writing blogs in sanskrit!  :-)

Oh my goodness!!!  I had to be away from my computer all day today in meetings and showings, and look at all the comments!  Thank you ALL for stopping by and sharing your comments....VERY much appreciated for sure!!

Maureen - I hope you get this for Christmas - it's a GREAT read!

TLW - I agree with you re: the 'geekspeak'...I love that I can now understand some of this now.  And I think I'll probably leave my past posts as they are and just go forward from here.

Joanne - go buy this book, you will really enjoy it!

Jim - I really appreciate you stopping by, and I agree with you regarding the 'field trips'.  They do add to what we're learning.

Ines - I didn't get the talkback either, but I see we had a great explanation of it.  And I did amend the title - thanks!

Carole - You're welcome!  I, too, need to work on implementing what the book says about tagging.  I loved the advice given on that in that chapter...now to put it in place!

Cynthia - Go buy this book - it has SO much info in it and I've only made it to Chapter 3!

Monika - Kiss the boys and make them cry!!  I'm looking forward to seeing what the rest of the book has in there for us!

Chris - as TLW mentioned, check out the listings under "Groups".  You'll see the group you asked about as well as others that might interest you.

Barry - thanks for stopping by my post, and for that explanation!  That was great, and I know we all appreciate your offer of further explanations along the way...thank YOU!!

Mariana - thanks for your feedback!!

Thanks again everyone for the great comments!!  Who wants Chapter 3??

Good review, Ann. I finally got the book and started reading, so going back through the series has been very helpful. So much new stuff to learn, understand, and put into practice. I will be rereading the series AND the book many times, I suspect. It feels a bit overwhelming.
