Tarter Issue Help from Antlers

My Cairn Terrier named Toto has a bad tarter issue.  My vet suggested that he may need a Deep Tartar Cleaning which would involve putting him under anesthetic and performing oral surgery.  Toto protested fully.

We went home to think about it since the issue is not causing him discomfort and it is not a cheap procedure.  Fast forward to a few months later and Brian and I are in our Favorite Pet Store.  Pet Supplies Plus on Little Rd. in Port Richey, Florida and they have "antlers" as chew toys.  We thought it was so weird but the salesman told us the marrow inside the antler is like crack to the doggies.  We were more happy about how hard they were.  Our Lab/Bull Terrier will annihilate any toy we give her.  Those indestructible Kong things are gone in 3 days and a Big Rawhide is gone overnight.

We bought 2 antlers.  Munchkin and Toto LOVE THEM and Chew on Them constantly.

    Our Kids.

Next trip to the Vet we get a report that Toto has large chunks of his tartar missing.  She was amazed and asked what I did and the only change was the antler.  In order for the dog to get to the marrow they need to chew on the antler standing straight up and down.  While they are enjoying the marrow the outside bone of the antler is scraping the tarter from their teeth.

If you have a Large Breed dog that goes through bones quickly or a dog with a tartar issue I suggest getting a few antlers and giving them a try.

Hey Mike-antlers huh? I will have to check it out. After Peanutman's very expensive tumor surgery a couple months back I can't go there again-he has the tartar deal too. Thx for the tip amico!
